Well, its good to know you know the difference between German and American standard GSD's. Now, from what you said, its seems that you are looking for a true working line GSD. Depending where you live, it may be very hard to do. IF you are willing to spend the money, $2000 plus, you should be looking for kennels that import their dogs or that breed international standards. One kennel that I have seen whose dogs look great is Kraftwerks. Its stationed in Washington state but are willing to ship the dogs to you practically anywhere in the states or canada. The website is www.kraftwerkk9.com . Their Trained Dogs section is probably what you are looking for. Most are Schutzhund and behavior certified. They range from 1.5 years upto 4 years old with various types of coats. They update the website quite regularly so they always have more dogs. This is not a "backyard breeder". These are the real deal trainer/handlers/breeders and their animals show it. They have one in perticular, Kaiko, solid black male under their stud section. Check out the videos, especially the protection one. Besides them, there are a couple throughout the states that have good dogs also. www.katzenblut.com has imports and they send you pictures if you ask them. Honestly, its just a matter of dealing with the correct breeder and finding that correct breeder. Good luck mate. Hope you find the right one for you.

Unfortunately, Americans can't leave well enough alone.
You probably have to look on line to find a breeder with strong European lines that don't have the draggy-butt syndrome (my own term.)
You can get them from Germany, but the expense of importing, and being sure you're getting the dog you want is a draw-back.
The attached link is an acquaintance of mine here in OK. Read her views on breeding (halfway down main page). She would be a good resource for you. She's into rescue, works her dogs, who are raised with her 7 kids and is very dog savvy. My next pure breed will be from her, but I've got all my mutsy rescues to live through first :])
Good luck.
Keep looking, they are out there. IMO, until the AKC and the show judges start choosing winners that DON'T look deformed, were never going to get pretty, healthy looking dogs out of breeders.
I was fortunate 10 years ago, both my pups are "normal" and I did see their Mom but not the father. She was beautiful and fairly "squared off", as are both my dogs.

the Shiloh Shepherd is more like the old line GSD's as Roy Roger's dog Bullet, and Rin-tin-tin.
