If you are allowed, Paint The Floor, Then Stencil on a unique pattern or single Design, on the 4 corners & in the center. Then seal with a Non-Yellowing Sealer, made for Wood.
Here are 2 suggestions:
"Seal-Gard" - 1 gallon bottle, A patented polymer sealer, stain resistant, all-acrylic, clear, non-yellowing water mulsion. Great for high traffic areas. Gives a higher brilliance, sharper color, deeper gloss, and longer wear to finished floors. Item #014704 - Cost $13.60. From:

Good Luck.

God Watcher had a clever idea, but...kinda messy...
Linoleum is an option, but consider this:
Use linoleum, but turn it over and coat the backing with a coat of gesso. Then you can paint the linoleum like a canvas! Use acrylic paints. All of the supplies can be purchased at the local artist supply store.
After painting, use a good clear polyeurethane or similar wood finish to protect the paint surface.
This holds up extremely well, looks cool (if you are an artist with good ideas) and you can take it with you when you go!

Sounds strange but I just watched a design show where they used a square of linoleum as an area rug instead of carpet. You can find more dramatic colors and patterns. And if you spill you can mop it. I take it there is no carpet on the floor in your room?

You could try finding a plywood with a nice grain. Cut the wood in large squares and simply lay on your floor alternating the grain. This really looks nice and is easy on he wallet. You can even stain or paint it to suit your style. Heck you could even use faux wood, stone, or brick paneling!
