OK, I am 15 and my dad is divorced. His girlfriend is this fundamentalist Christian and is totally strict and I don't get along so great with her. The other day she starts yelling at me because she heard me talking back to my dad. She goes "someone ought to tan my hide? what does that mean?

Well as they already told you "tan your hide" means you need to be spanked on your behind, but it could apply to any old fashioned whooping. She was probably referring to the lack of discipline in which she believes in, which is that kids do not talk back to their parents. If she and your father have different views on discipline I forsee many problems between them. It is a very controversial issue.

It comes from the leatherworking industry where they hit the leather to cure it. Basically it means a spanking. No one at 15 years old should get a spanking. Perhaps you can work on talking back with your Dad and she can work on learning to speak to you respectfully as well. If she believes in the church's laws you might be successful in setting up some church counseling. Make sure your Dad is involved too.

Fundies believe "spare the rod (don't use a stick) and spoil the child" so get ready for the whippings. They believe in them. If I were you, I'd have social services number REAL handy and USE it if she starts abusing you. But then again, they'll just take you out of the house which may be what she wants to get your father to herself.
Your best best would be to find a way to get her arrested and/or on the news for child abuse. Possibly thru the school by turning her in thru any "marks" she may have left on your legs.

She is definitely overstepping some boundaries by telling your dad to spank you. She is not your mother and I would talk to your father about her role in your family as his girlfriend and not your parent.
