Get him a small indoor planting box so that he can spend his time taking care of the small shrubs and plants, it can add warmth to the house, some are made of thick glass. Another idea is to get him a small aquarium to keep his mind constantly occupied. Happy Birthday and many happy returns, Grand Pa !!!

We had Sky installed for my dad when he turned 70 because he loved the wildlife and nature programmes.
Why don't you find out what sort of things he ate (pickled eggs, Fishermans Friend,), I can't think of very much but, what I'm saying is: find out what he used to love and hasn't had for years, make up a basket for him of all those old favourites, Spangles are another thing I've just thought of. A nice meal out with you all would be nice too, even a special poem made up by you.
Look for a rose bush or plant that includes his name. Things like that. Have fun whilst you look.
I wish your grandad a wonderful happy birthday and many many more like it.

Elderly people spend a lot of time down 'Memory Lane'.You could get a re-print of a newspaper published on the day he was born. Also if you know of any old friends he has not seen for a while, contact them and invite them to a surprise birth-day party.I don't know your financial situation, but maybe the family could have a collection & buy him a motorized wheel-chair,that would give him the freedon to go out without being dependent on others.

If he is home alot what about something that will keep him busy at home? Try a DVD of some nature programing, or a bird bath/house so he can enjoy watching the birds in his yard. Offer to help set these things up for him, until he gets the hang of it.

why don't you get all the family pictures you can find and scan them off onto your computer then you make him a DVD using these pictures. i would be more than happy to help you if you've never done this before. i have done many-for mother's day. father's day, anniversaries, and i plan on doing one for my parents 20th anniversary- and they are really easy to do. they are always the hit of the party and you could even incorporate the gardening and nature into it.

When my grandpa turned 80, I remember we got him afew presents, and a cake. We also brought him some balloons and he thought they were they greatest. It was priceless. We couldn't get over how much he enjoyed the balloons. It is the simpliest things that mean the most.
