I want to take a cheap dvd player to Italy (instead of buying a more expensive portable dvd player w/ screen) to the place I'm statying at in Italy, which has a tv that's at least ten years old. Would the connection(s) on the tv be compatible in order to see dvds on it thru the US-bought dvd player?

Not likely. I believe Italia uses the PAL standard where US DVDs use the NTSC standard. They are not compatible. You would have to use an NTSC to PAL converter.

Video formats won't work.
Power is not the same either US 60hz and Europe 50hz.
