We contractors hate that kind of question. Its sort of like asking: "How long is a line?"

Spend your time and call some contractors to come out and give you bids.

Be up front with them and tell them you want estimates.

Be clear in your head what the material is you are putting down.

Don't change your mind and expect the price to be the same. For example if you are going to use 18 inch tiles, that price will be different than if you use 12 inch or 6 inch tiles.

Also, I personally charge differently depending on the maker of the tile (translation; quality of the tile). A well crafted precision tile is easier (cheaper) to install than an uneven or misshapen tile.

I'm in California, but the idea stays the same everywhere.

Respect your contractor, and they will respect you. Don't try to take advantage or get the absolute lowest price. If you can't aford it now, then save your money and wait until next year when you can afford to do a decent job.

Mike

PS. Local tile suppliers often carry business cards of contractors they recommend. Typically they will be happy to give you three or more people to contact, based on your requirements.

You need to work out how many tiles you require by visiting a tile store and price them. Get in touch with a few tilers and get some quotes.
