You have to move to make the blow glance off of you. That is one reason their faces are smeared with Vaseline. Some people have more resistance to devastating strikes than others. They make good boxers. They might be able to slightly gain resistance by training, but repeated knockdowns is probably more likely to make it worse. BUT no one can really take a devastating strike straight to the head and not eat the mat. Not even people on PCP. No one.

Boxers tend to breathe out sharply when they punch to add power or in martial arts a kihop. But when you get punched in the stomach while inhaling you get winded. When you get punched in the stomach while exhaling air empties and muscles tighten causing a little resistance so the punch doesn't hurt as much.
Also when boxers take a punch they tend not to think about it or shake it off. Thinking about it makes the healing process slower. And that's how boxers take those devastating hits.

Part of it is practice, part of it is training. Notice the thick necks of many boxers.. this helps the head absorb some of the jolt of a strong punch. You get knocked out when your brain hits the inside of the skull due to contact. A strong neck helps hold the head in place so that the brain doesn't move around so much inside the skull.

Conditioning. The same reason why any athlete can take the high degree of physical pain in any full contact sport. Training and acclimatising to the tough rigours and demands that that particular sport places on you. Some athletes are stronger and consequently they thrive on those pressures, others are not so adverse.

It varies according to each individual and how they approach their particular sport. American Football is tough and Americans have a habit of developing tough physical athletes who love the confrontational aspect of American Football. Its inherited they love the sport and so that is the reason why there is a high participation rate. In order to participate you have to be tough. Boxing is no different.

Athletes do it for the love of the sport as kids and develop the skills early on in their career, strength, speed, stamina. The training identifies key athletes and their weakness and this is where the coaches play a key role in organising objectives to enhance the athletes skill base. Those lucky enough to continue earn money and have a career in the sport.

It could also be a number of factors. A hard lving as a young child. Joe Louis worked hard as a young boy, lifting huge blocks of ice that developed his strength, it also has to do with the warrior mentality. Amercian football is about physical strength and explosive speed. If you have to play that sport it only stands to reason that you have to be tough. Which is why, only the cream of the crop filter through to the upper echelon of any of the sports. Only the best need apply. But the skills developed as a child holds is the key to enhancing them as you get older.
