I was just given an 8 month old maltese puppy a couple of days ago. He sleeps with my fiance and I at night and in the morning i find little sesame seed looking things in my bed. What are they? Should i be grossed out?

Based on some of the answers i recieved i went and bought some liquid wormer. It says for large roundworms and hookworms. Its called pyrantel pamoate. Will it work? Also , I believe this is the same stuff my vet gave me when my lab was a pup and was charged like $20. I got it @ Wal-mart for $5! It looks and smells the same.

Those are dried up tapeworm segments. Don't freak out. They are not the worm itself, just the egg sacs. They look like a grain of rice and can move a bit when fresh (look at her butt and her stool to see them). When they dry up they look like sesame seeds. Larvae fleas eat them, then infect the pet when the dog or cat eats the adult flea while grooming. You need some tapeworm medicine called praziquantel. It is now over the counter at the pet store or the vets. One dose is all he needs. Use flea control to prevent.

Your little dog definitely has tapeworm and probably fleas too. Take it to the vet. I do not recommend over the counter medications and wormers, even though I am a pet shop because the vet can give the exact dose for the weight of the dog and can warn you of possible side affects of medications. Good idea to wash linens daily until this is under control because if you have another dog, it could get this passed to it or a cat too.

Oh god, your puppy has worms and/or flea eggs. Be very afraid. If it's fleas, you are in big trouble. You'll have to strip, vaccuum and bomb everything in your house. If it's worms, be worried about the affects of the worms being in the puppy for so long. A few pills prescribed by your local vet can cure worms. Just be very careful because humans can also get worms from their dogs and can get sick! Good Luck!

I did a search and found that the "seeds" might be tapeworm eggs. Here is an excerpt from one of the websites:

"Tapeworms are intestinal parasites that often afflict puppies, especially young dogs that have had flea infestations. Fleas eat tape worm eggs. When the dog grooms, she ingests fleas, and anything in the flea's body. Once in the canine intestines, the tapeworms hatch. The worms are flat and segmented. Each segment contains eggs. Segments and egg cases can be seen in an infected dog's stool: they resemble uncooked grains of rice or sesame seeds. Tapeworm medication comes in tablet form or an injection from your veterinarian."

Those are dried up tapeworm segments! If one kitten is being treated for worms, then they both need to be. And hopefully from the vet - very few over the counter wormers will do a thing for tapeworms. Tapeworms usually come from fleas, so they both need to be flea treated as well. If you practice normal hygiene, you aren't at risk. But do get them to the vet - both of them - so that they are treated with something safe and effective.

I'd check his skin to see if it's coming from there first. A good brush, bath, comb, dry, brush should get rid of any surface 'stuff'.

Tapeworms look like grains of rice in their stool, and if any stuck to his coat after a bowel movement they may be drying and falling off in bed. Tapeworms are easy to treat, but you need to have the vet check to confirm diagnosis and it's a one pill treatment based on weight.

I'd suggest a vet visit is in order anyway, since this dog is new to you and you want to get him started on the right paw for his long-term health.

those are tapeworms...take him to the vet for the right meds, they usually prescribe Droncite for tapeworms. The dog should be treated for fleas too, take is how they get this particular type of worm....from swallowing a flea. Wouldn't be a bad idea to bring in a stool sample to the vet as well as he could have other parasites as well.

Dried up worms! Gross, I know but easy to fix... Just get some wormer and you'll be fine... Wash everything the dog lays on and don't let him sleep with you for a week or so... Good luck and sorry for the gross news!!!!!
