Many Christians dont speak in tongues. According to the Bible it is not a gift for all believers. Pentacostals and Apostolics like to believe it is so that they can believe they're "more saved" than other people. They site Acts 2 and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit when everyone at that time spoke in tongues... but they skip the part that nonbelievers heard them in their own languages... which means they were speaking HUMAN languages OR God gave the gift of interpretation of tongues to non believers.
These CHAPTERS (not just verses) of 1 Cor talk about tongues, who gets them, what they're for and when to use them and when not to: 1 Cor 12,13,14 & 15 Nowhere does it ever say it is the sign of the Holy Spirit... it is A sign yes, but not THE sign. None of the Apostles ever implied that someone wasnt saved if they did not have tongues,... so since Paul said "If anyone comes to you, preaching a different message than we do, let him be forever accursed" I'd say stay away from these people :)

If you are in a Pentecostal Church and don't speak in tongues you are looked down on.
They view it a must.
They make too much of The gift.
I don't say that it doesn't exist, only that they make too much of it.
They avoid looking at the 12th chapter of 1 Cor. Where it asks,"do all speak in tongues?" It is a question that is posed along with the other gifts. No not all speak in tongues.
Then there is the Baptists that say that the gift no longer exists.
So you go from one extreme to another.
The people that told you that you will go to hell for not speaking in tongues--had better repent. That is not Biblical, if it is not in the Bible then it is wrong. That borders on cultism.

1)I'm not Pentecostal but from first hand experience and my brother, if you don't speak in tongues then you have not been baptized in the Holy Spirit. ANd they definitely clearly say that. I heard that twice. they say you have the Holy Spirit in you but you are not Baptized in the Holy Spirit.
2)If you dont speak in tongues, maybe its not your gift, and if you want to ask God he will give you the desires of your heart. but most you shall want to prophesy.
Paul says that speaking in tongues is okay but that we all should want to prophesy. Also that there must be an interpreter there if not and people are just speaking in tongues with out interpretation it can become a form of worship(idolatry). Some times people in the Pentecostal Church speak in the same tongues(my brother experienced that), but in the bible tongues is an unknown language, So why are they speaking in the same tongues? They learn it from some one and speak the same tongue.

If you read the bible it is a gift from God, Not everyone has this gift. To speak in tongues THERE must be an interpreter who can say what that person is saying. Some people have the gift of healing, some the gift teaching, and so on. It is all in the Bible. You will not go to hell for not speaking in tongues but you will for not having Jesus in your heart and living for him.

I grew up in the pentecostal church. Actually it grew out oof the original Assemblies of God church. The United Pentecostal Church. That was many years ago and I have since become a nonspecific denomination believer. As a truck driver its hard for me to maintain membership in a local church but over the years I have come to believe in certain core beliefs of the faith that most mainline denominations agree on. For me the whole speaking in tongues thing was a stumbling block. I believe that the Bible says that God the Father was pleased to have the fullness of the Godhead dwell in Him (Jesus) in bodily form. It also says that Jesus is at present seated at the right hand of God Almighty. The whole idea that many people are missing when it comes to the place of the Holy Spirit today is that what Jesus declared about Himself is also true of the Holy Spirit, that is that He and the father are one. The mystery of the trinity is such that it renders many doctrines of the Faith difficult to many of us. But it is clear to me that what can best be dicerned in the Doctrine of the trinity is that if you have accepted the work of Christ on the cross as for yourself, I cannot see whereas that would exclude us from having the fullness of what God has for us and that means that I can pray directly to God the Father in the power of the Spirit in the name of Christ. Receiving Christ in my heart as Lord and Savior in no way can mean that I unseat Him from the right hand of the Father but He dwells in me in the person of the Holy Spirit and therefore there is no need for a second act of grace that I need to merit in order to get something that I have already received through Jesus and His shed blood for me on the cross. I can rejoice that the Holy Spirit communicates with my own spirit the things that are of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

tongues is mainly for prayer, don't feel that if you don't speak in it you will go to hell. it is wrong for the church and it's members to condemn you or anybody if you don't. in the Bible at Pentecost tongues was used as a communication method of the spirit and later on the Apostle Paul lets us know to use it as a set apart prayer method.

Apostolic Penecostals. I've been to Pentecostal churches that didn't believe this. The ones that did believe it were the churches that were just fake to the point of being ridiculous.
There are verses used to back this up, but really... whatever it is you want to do or believe, you can back it up with the Bible if you look hard enough. The Bible is one big work of circular logic and circular storytelling.
But, if you really want to know what they believe, then here's a site where they are discussing this doctrine themselves.

Speaking in Tongues is one of many spiritual gifts. Many denominations have turned their entire focus onto just one or two of the gifts and claim that these are necesary for salvation. They are wrong. Some are given the gift, but all gifts must work together. Anyone who claims that more than aceeptance of Christ's sacrifice is required are preaching another gospel.

I'm not worried about what Pentecostals require - what God requires is what we Christians are to be doing... follow Him(Jesus) ---it didn't say follow Pentecostals, Baptists, Lutherans, Amish etc...
