All you need to do is tie down the crate so the crate doesnt move. I suggest that you let the doggie sit in the passenger side of the car so the doggie doesnt get naushous / car sick or squshed espically if it is a long car ride. I dont think it is a very safe place to put the dog considering the dog might get sick in a crate for an extended period of time.

For safety reasons your dogs crate should be prevented from moving in the back of the truck. It would also be very upsetting to the dog if it were be slid all around the back of a truck.
If your dog rides in the front of the truck with you and is in the crate, you still need to prevent the crate from moving. (Maybe the seatbelt can fasten around it)
If your dog drives in the front not in a crate, you must prevent the dog from being able to jump on you or intefeere with your driving. (man hit my car when his dog jumped on him and he lost control of his truck thus hitting my car.
Finally, if your dog is in the bed, many states have a law stating animals in back MUST be secured from sliding in back, being able to jump out or being thrown out of vehicle.

Yes, this would be the safest place. If you could secure the crate to the truck.

Yes, it would. When you put the crate at the other end, there exists an unlikely chance that the crate would bump the door open and fall off. If you drive with a canopy, you also would risk your dog from getting monoxide poisoning.

there really isn't a "safest" place in this situation, if you get in an accident, they're screwed. HOWEVER... I've always put the crate in last at the tailgate. They're big dogs and not easy to get out around everything, it's easiest for pit stops and when they get out they arent' breaking fishing poles and jumping around on the tents.

To make sure, you can let the dog drive while you will hold on to a rope or something. Tie the crate well and you wont have a problem...

And you should get one of those roof thingies that covers the back of the pick-up truck . For extra safety .

Make sure you tie down the crate firmly; you don't want it to slide around. Try to keep your dog out of the wind and /or rain. Make frequent stops so he can stretch and make when he needs to.
Have fun!
