The credit score is not the same as your credit report, so most of the answers you've gotten are wrong. You can get your credit score "free" by signing up at MyFico.com. You get a 30-day free trial, and can cancel before then and not pay. You still need a credit card.

If you call the 3 major credit bureas and request a credit report it will be sent to your house free of charge within 7 days

They want a credit card usually because it signs you up for something like a program. And then you need to cancel the program before you are actually charged for anything. Try contacting one of the bureaus directly to see what they say for good reliable credit checks.
