What are some cross country bike training tips?

Find an experienced rider in your area and see if he/she will help get you off on the right foot. At one of the shops I worked at, I'd have a monthly beginner ride to help new riders learn how to ride off-road. I also rode with some of them to further help their skills.

This sort of one-on-one thing really is the best way to learn to ride.

Two general tips for mountain biking: Where high-quality shorts, and don't look at the obstacles...look at the way AROUND the obstacles. I figure telling you to wear a helmet is just too obvious.

Road or mountain?

If you're training for road distance, like a century (100 mile) ride, the key is to get out EVERY DAY if you can. Give yourself a couple days a week to recover fully, and alternate training days between "Yawn, I'm Bored" and "I Think I'm Gonna Die!" The best way to get stronger is to overstress your cardiovascular and muscular systems, and then recover.

Tips? Wear sunscreen to keep your skin cooler, no undies beneath your bike shorts (sorry, it's not obvious to everyone), and make sure your bike fits you properly. Don't eat crap, and get a full night's sleep.

For condition, try some road riding. For techniques, practice, practice. And repeat ;)

You can try some riding clinics. Try asking at some bike shops, they might know about some. Sometimes there are women-only clinics, and they might be really good, since usualy men and women see riding different, and sometimes women feel better to ask questions when there are only women.

Also, you can try reading some books. Try Ned Overends 'Mountain Bike Like a Champion' and Brian Lopes and Lee McCormac "mastering mountain bike techniques".

Try riding with better riders than yourself. Try to watch what they do, and ask any questions. But don't overdo it, don't try to ride with the fastest guys out there, just some that are a little better, and try to follow them.
