Boredom: he's digging because he's left outside alone for hours or all day. Solution: keep him indoors when you're away, and supervise him when he's outside

Horomones: he's not neutered and he smells females in heat nearby, so he's dying to get out. Solution: get him fixed ASAP

Fence installation: fence is thin, not tensioned, and has an attractive gap under it making it tempting to dig at. Solution: tension fence, backfill against bottom of fence. Some people put down RR ties along bottom of a fence.

Here's a trick that works for my dogs:
When they dig a hole, fill that hole with some of your dog's poop, then cover it with dirt. He'll stop digging in that same spot all together.

This doesn't address the issue of why he's digging in the first place. He's probably digging because he's bored. Get him to exercise more and he'll stop. Tired dogs are not destructive.

Your dog needs daily leash walks (at least an hour a day if possible) with you leading and your dog following you (this is very important). With enough controlled exercise (dog walking with the pack leader - which should be you in his eyes) he will be happy to stay in the yard the rest of the day.

dogs resort to digging and other behavior because they go "nest crazy." Dogs need to be taken on walks often and your larger dogs need to do work like carry packs and stuff.

electrify the fence. They hit it and they will know that its "hot" and won't dig at it. It won't kill them and they'll learn real quick not to do it anymore.
