If there are more men that women you can use them as ushers and not groomsmen but if you want them to stand up with you then yes proper ettiquette dictates that the numbers are even.

It's your wedding. Do whatever the heck you want. I get a little tired of people who insist on following "tradition" when there is a growing divorce rate every year (not following tradition) and people pick and choose the pieces of the tradition they want anyways. Like they will insist on the even number of bridesmaids/groomsmen or the white dress, or the vows, or the cake, etc. etc. However meanwhile you find the people have already been sleeping together, living together, the parents hate each other, the dress is rented. You get my point. If you are going to follow "tradition" simply to follow "tradition" go 100% or not.
I say do what you want! It's your/your fiance's one and only wedding day.

No. Don't be like that lady from Bridezilla who was obsessed with having an equal number of bridesmaids and groomsmen. She kept saying, "It's unbalanced". It's not that serious. It will be fine.

No its not a mustif there are more girls then guys have 1 guy escort 2 girls and if there are more guys they can walk alone. The same goes for flower girls and ring bearers or bell ringers. My mother in law has been a wedding coordinator for over 10 years and I have been helping her with them for the past 4 years...I've seen alot of weddings..If your still not sure visit theknot.com they have all the "proper" ways to do things. I say be your self though the only right way to have your wedding is how you want it. Its your day do it how you want to I know I did.

No it is not a necessary. If you have more of one side than another that is your own personal choice and someone gets to double up. Have fun and don't worry about numbers.

No, no one cares about that at all. You're not having a matchmaking party. Have uneven sides-- it is not a problem.

It makes for better looking pictures if you are even on both sides.
