What colour is the Dog??? If it has white hairs choc brown is not a great plan...something in a natural tone that goes with the present shades..hard wearing that is easy to clean. Take colour samples of your paint scheme and ask for something Scotchguarded. Take advice from the carpet store and shop around for prices.

You don't mention what style you're going for but earth tones are an easy pick. Take your paint chips to the store and tell the salesperson what look you're going for. Take some samples home and live with them for a while before laying out your money.
I agree with a previous poster in that the wood floors are cleaner and easier for folks with allergies. You may consider an area rug instead of wall to wall carpet. It'll be easier to change the look of the room when you're ready.
I think that a patterned rug looks good whereas a patterned carpet can be too busy and we all know the pattern is going to hide evidence of the child and the dog.

Is any colour pactical if you have a dog & a child. Your wooden floor is so much better as it is hygenic and easier to clean.
If you want a change, why not sand it & stain it a different shade? Otherwise your only options are a cream carpet (ha, what a joke to keep cream) or brown.
Good luck with your choice :-)

With a two year old and a dog flooring would probally more practical. Just think of the comparison of cleaning flooring to cleaning carpet.

i'm surprised you want to switch to carpet after having a wood floor with a 2 year old. toddler's and carpet are such a pain! I have carpet in my apartment and a 2 and 4 year old and some days i wish i could rip the carpet up and just have concrete!

A Natural Hessian Colour would show up that many marks or a light brown colour

Forest Green, Choc. Brown or a Darker tan all go fairly well with kids and dogs. darker colors hide stains better but do show lint ect.

why dont you get a cream carpet and a huge brown rug to stop it getting so dirty or keep the flooring and just buy the rug?
