How many wives depends on wealth and stature.
Poor = 3 wives
Rich= 7 wives
King=21 wives
Prophet of God=72 wives
Wife with more than one husband= stoning to death

Muslim men are not supposed to have more than one wife. However, they have the license to have a max of 4 at the same time only at certain situation given that they will be just to all.
Quran is the ONLY Holy Book that says: marry ONLY one if you cant be just. No other book even the bible states such a statement!
This license from God has been offered for many reasons but mainly for the sake of women. Nowadays, and due to many reasons, the number of women exceeds the number of men in the world. This is due to biological reasons and due to political reasons (wars). In America, there are 7 million women greater than men. So, if men were to marry only 1 wife, there will be 7 million women without marriage! this great number of women still husbands to take care of them emotionally (of course assuming that adultery is not permitted due to its extremely bad effects). Hence, this license was offered as a solution for such cases.

ok dickn2000 I don`t know where you got your info but IT`S WRONG!!!!
Men are allowed to have up to 4 wives at a time. This isn`t really practised anymore however it is there. In most Countries polygamy is against the law and there for it doesn`t really exist anymore.
Islam didn`t create polygamy it created a way to control it. In that time it wasn`t unheard of for a man to have up to 100 wives. How appreciated do you think these women were. This goes back past biblical times. God says in the Quran that you are only allowed to have as many as 4 wives at one time and you have to be able to take care of them. This means financially, can you house each wife, provide clothing and food for each family? Do you have enough time to spend quality time with each wife? This is so difficult to do that many men don't want to be bothered.
As for the womens end, this has nothing to do with men being superior to women it simply has to do with procreation. How would you feel if you were married to a woman who had more than one husband and she got pregnant? Who's child is it? Also in Islam it is forbidden for sibblings to marry and since you will know who the children belong to you shouldn't have this problem; especially since the children always take the name of the father even if there is a divorse or an adoption.

Men aren't supposed to have more than one wife, but before Islam men were having multiple wives with no limit. Some men had as many as 300 wives. Islam came and put a limit on the number of wives you can have, if you insist upon having more than one (the limit is 4).

Mohammad had many wifes at once, incuding one who was only 6 years old.
Muslim women however, can only have one husband.. that is if she wishes to remain alive!!
