hi, i hope someone can help me,. My moms 3 yeard old springer spaniel is in recovery after suffering quite bad meningitis. He is finally back home and is on a lot of tablets that i do not know the name of. He is slowly getting back to normal except one big problem; he cant urinate on his own anymore. This means that my mom and dad have to empty his bladder three times a day using a catheter. The vet said he should be urinating on his own by now and he is showing some signs of wanting to goe, but he doesnt actually go through with it.. I would really appreciate some advice on how to encourage him to go on his own.
Many Thanks

Is he trying to urinate on his own? Like does he squat or lift his leg or look like he is trying at all? If he's making no attempt to even try, I would talk to your vet about possible reasons he could be doing this. If he does try, it's possible that his muscles just aren't strong enough because he got weak from being ill. Maybe his nerves around the area were permanently affected? I've seen this happen in dogs, and they need to be manually expressed for the rest of their lives.

This sounds like a problem you really need to talk to your vet about. Good luck!

I really feel for the dog and for your parents. I can't advise anything, accept that you see your vet. Good luck,
