Well, for specialize parts of the service, the have got to have the best.....they are so technical now...and computerized....they need at least high school grads.....and in some specialties, college. Soon, the guns are going to be computerized also....you will need a computer degree at that time...sheeshhhh....lets get those robots out there, and let them fight...and by the way, that is getting close to being fact also......did you know that some of those spy planes...the drones in Iraq are flown in Arizona? damn, amazing, isn't it?

I am an Army veteran, and during my service I pulled four years of duty as a recruiter. The Army requires higher standards because the Army realized that:
1) those who fail to complete school often (not always) fail to complete other things in life. This is incompatible with military service.
2) those who do not have at least a high school education often don't have the skills to perform the work required of them. An infantryman needs to be able to understand the highly technical equipment that he uses. GPS systems, TOW or Dragon missiles require specialized training. Mortars require a knowledge of geometry/trigonometry to adjust indirect fire, and so forth.
3) even cooks need to have complex mathematical skills. If the mess hall feeds 450 soldiers a day, the cooks need to know how to adjust the recipes for the numbers of people they feed. If a basic recipe calls for the feeding of 250, and they are now feeding 450, they need to know how to adjust the ingredients. Otherwise, food (and therefore money) goes to waste.
Prior to the all-recruited, all volunteer Army, people were drafted. Generally, those who served then were not nearly as committed as those serving now. We have the best fielded, best trained, and most intelligent Army in the world. It is because the standards have been changed, looking for better recruits.

My brother had a GED and got turned down. The united states army is pretty smart and requires people who can read, write and think critically. An illegal alien, or say someone with a 7th grade education can not do this. If we had 7th graders in the war they would be shooting at us. I think the government learned from their mistakes of the past. I wouldnt worry about your husband not going around a computer. He might be a people person instead, or spend his time in a more useful way.

As a military disabled vet, no offense taken. That being said, the idea is for you to get a very good education in order to be selected for promotion, and also to have something to fall back on in case you get out the military for whatever reason, or your rate (job) becomes obsolete. A lot of cutbacks are being made also due to the massive amounts of money being spent on the war. The branches of service can't afford to keep everyone, so the more education you have, the better qualified you are for the job so to speak. It's becoming very competitive.

Even the ground pounder is placed in situations which require them to...think. Why? Peoples lives are at stake. The new equipment is more complex than 5,10, 15, 20, 25 years ago. The lil private that today is just a worker bee grows up to be the Sergeant one day and will lead troops and make decisions that mean life or death for those under them...
Get the picture?

well since vietnam alot of soldiers were left on the streets cause after the army they had no special training and how many jobs available are there for grunts.security guard, cop, bouncer at a nudi club? so they attempt to give out education to help them on the outside world if the choose to be civilian after their time is up. but most of the classes seem to revolve around safety or at least thats what i noticed as the diff. since i came in. when i first started even driving a 5ton we wore our berets. now its mandatory to wear a helmet and get a safety class before approaching a vehicle. my guess is this is their way off covering their hide.

The army does allow some people with GEDs. But generally, the Army wants smart people because even a trigger-puller on patrol has to operate communications equipment, rangefinders, tracking devices, etc. and has to make good decisions (who to shoot or not, defuse a situation without killing people, etc). We want a well-educated army so we can be the most flexible army.

They want to have competent people in our armed forces now because they don't want someone getting captured and not having the sense to keep secrets from our enemies. They have to have the intellect to maintain the security of our nation even if they get captured by the enemy. Things have changed in the military as they have in all aspects of life since your husband served. My husband is currently serving, and I'm glad they don't let just ANYONE join. Granted, he didn't get his high school diploma, but he did get his GED. He's a very intelligent man, and serves his country as a combat medic.
*side note to Mordent: have you been to Iraq? do you KNOW that the Iraqis hate our soldiers? until you spend at least 6 months over there, I don't want you spouting off things that our dumbass media tells you! As I mentioned above, my husband is currently serving in Iraq, his 2nd tour in fact, and those people LOVE our soldiers! Until you've been there, don't state things of which you aren't certain!

The US army does not do enough training. How about "how to distinguish between a friendly soldier and the enemy" for a start. Next "how not to torture enemy prisoners". Then "How to not be complete jackasses and make the population of the country you are occupying hate you"

The weapon systems that they have now are more advanced
and some are operated by computers The more education you
have, the less discipline that you need.
