can I use the lice shapoo to clean my hair, with out it doing anything to my son when I am breastfeeding him? I just called his doctor they told me to wait until tomorrow when my doctor will be in, to ask them. Does any one know anyways to kill the head lice without using the shapoo?

Permethrin (NIX, Elimite), a topical insecticide for lice & scabies, is considered safe for nursing moms. Per Thomas Hale, PhD (author of Medications and Mothers' Milk), the amount transferred into milk is minimal and this drug is also used directly in children. Permethrin is preferred over Lindane, an older pesticide which is not recommended for use in newborns and young children.

If you have head lice, it has been found that absorption of permethrin (Nix) through the skin is less than two percent. It is rapidly metabolized and then excreted in the urine. Though the use of this medication has not been well-studied in relation to human lactation, "only very small levels have been found in cow's milk following topical application." (Hale, 1996)

There are many things used to kill lice, but not all work. Some people swear by Mayo. If that's what you wanna try, lather it into your hair apply a shower cap leave in overnight, wash hair and use a nit comb for the eggs. I also found a recipe for you on the web: Small Amount
2 tablespoons Tea Tree Oil
6 ounces Dawn Dishwashing Liquid (Dawn ONLY)
2 ounces white vinegar

Medium Amount
2 ounces Tea Tree Oil
12.5 ounces Dawn Dishwashing Liquid (Dawn ONLY)
4 ounces white vinegar

Large Amount
4 ounces Tea Tree Oil
25 ounces Dawn Dishwashing Liquid (Dawn ONLY)
8 ounces white vinegar

Mix the three ingredients in a large squeeze bottle, such as an empty dish soap bottle. Use as regular shampoo, leave on for about 5 minutes before rinsing. Use conditioner to soften hair and keep dandruff down. Tea Tree Oil may cause some dandruff, but the bugs will be gone. May use every day, and bugs are usually gone within a week. Be VERY CAREFULL not to get in eyes or mouth.

Also remember to treat any pillows stuffed animals etc that you may have come in contact with. Stuff that can't be washed like stuffed animals may be stored in a tied plastic bag for two weeks.
Good luck!

Nope. You have to use the poison. All other methods fail. You may want to pump some breastmilk to save for a 24-48 period. The lindane is really very toxic.

I was told by a hair stylist that vinegar or mayo will do it.
