I was driving my car today when I hit a bump and heard a SNAP. When I pulled into the gas station, I noticed the whole front end of my lincoln was resting on the front tires. The air compressor was coming on, but it was not lifting the front end of the car. Does anyone have any idea what might have happened?????

You air strut busted. I had a 1994 model. Call Advance Auto Parts. They have a kit made by Monroe with 4 gas struts and 4 coil springs to replace those air struts. It's going to cost you $499 but it is worth it. It bolts up the same.

Here is what happened! After you hit the bump, and you heard the SNAP, your ride control light should have came on. What's happened is that the airbags that your Lincoln rides on in the front has blown out. This is a bad thing. Your car does not have regular shocks or struts like most cars do. Your car has an air ride suspension. It's designed to give you a very smooth and level ride at all times. For example, if there was some significant weight added to your back seat, the back of the car would sag and the ride sensor would detect that the back was lower than the front. Thus the air ride system would put more air in the air bags in the back to level the car up. When the excessive weight is removed, your car would look like it had a lift kit installed in the back. Then once the car sensed that the weight was removed, it would return the suspension system back to normal.
I am giving you all of this information from my first hand experience. I had a 1989 Continental and the back air bags blew out after I hit a dip in the road and had three healthy adults in my back seat. After labor and parts at the local Ford dealership, the bill came to about a grand. So it is up to you now to decide whether or not the investment is worth it.
Sorry to hear about your air bags. Good luck with the repairs

Sounds like the air bag busted. Cant say which one due to the fronts work together and the rears do the same. Most of the time the rear blow first. You are looking at some money for this. I would recommend at looking at the aftermarket struts that have coil springs and will replace the air springs. I can't remember where you can get them, but a few calls to the local part stoes should be able to find them

Josh S should know better the air bags do not work together. That system has independent valves to let air in or out on each individual bag. It sounds like your bag did go bad and if so you can have just the bag replaced which isn't to bad maybe $200 to $300 hundred depends on who does it. In the mean time go to the trunk and turn off the air suspension so you don't burn out your pump.

You may have a broken air supply line to the front air bags.
You should have it checked at a Ford dealer they may have a repair kit available.
