If shedding hair is a problem then neither the German Shepherd or the Rottweiler would be suitable. I am personally a fan of Komondors and agree that they are a fab watchdog but grooming is a task that requires professional attention and will cost a fortune. If hair is not a problem then any of the above dogs will do but never ever go for a doberman, i thought i had the most placid of them all and one bad day, and the vet lost two fingers. Shepherds are prone to hip displaya. A borzoi is the most glorious of watchdogs, previously used by Russian noblemen to hunt down wolves, even the sight of one sends me away. They are also an increasingly popular pet and show dog.

I'd say a Doberman Pincher or a German Shepard, I have a German Shepard puppy that is 17 weeks and he's already barking when the doorbell rings or when someone comes in the door. But if you have a Doberman they are mainly one person dogs, my dad hadone when he was in his twentys. German Shepards are family dogs nd very good guard dogs. you can also train a dog to guard your house.

A very well trained and socialized Rottweiler. They are great family pets, protective of owner and children as well as whatever they happen to be in...like your car. They don't yipe constantly, they don't growl profusely, but they will sudenly let out deep barks when something is close. Nobody would hang around for long when they hear an adult Rottweilers bark. They are muscular, strong, faithful and intelligent...

Many breed make fine family protectors.
Get one that you can handle the training with.
Dobermans take TONS of training time and effort and they need a firm experienced handler. If not they will rule the house and you will be there only to service their needs.
Rotts are more laid back and so are shepards. Both of those breeds are more willing to please.
Any large dog that barks that you train with and love will protect you and your family.
Most dogs are naturally wary of strangers.

Ask the police dept. which is the best for a guard dog. Dogs are actually pets and family members. If you have a guard dog I hope you have mega insurance.
