I have been a self injurer for 6 long years. I am 17 years old. I haven't self injured for a little over a month, and I relapsed. I cut myself just minutes ago. Should I tell my mom, dad and counselor that I relapsed, or should I keep it a secret?

Definitely tell them. I am 33 and I have been self cuttng since I was 19. I still have the occasional relapse and I always tell my therapist when I do. As a matter of fact, I just cut a couple of weeks ago when a bunch of things went wrong and I got seriously overwhelmed.

Keeping it inside will only increase your feelings of guilt, which will make you more inclined to relapse again. Don't ever be afraid or ashamed of telling your parents and your counselor when you have any kind of problem.

Relapses are part of getting better, we learn from every fall, as long as we get back up afterwards.

Hang in there, you'll be just fine!

Talk to someone.

Why are you cutting yourself?

Cutting is a call out for help. There is an underlying problem that you need help with. It is important to find out what that problem is. So, please keep talking to someone you can confide in. Hopefully, that someone is a professional.

My daughter used to cut herself. It turned out that there was some pressure there that needed looking after although she did not realize this. Soon, the cutting did not make her feel better and thoughts of suicide began.

Once the problem had been discovered and removed things started to turn around. Today, 8 years later, she is leading a normal life.

You have nothing to be afraid of. Address what may be bothering you with your counsellor. This could actually be something so very simple to fix.

Don't withdraw. This does not seem to be an issue with you as you are asking for help. Good going. Keep it up.

But do keep talking to your parents, a good friend or your counsellor.

You recognize that you have a problem and this is good. Once the recognition is there, the help is not far away. Talking with a professional will help to resolve the underlieing problem and the cutting will stop.

Some people who are depressed and cut themselves put an elastic around one of their wrists. When the urge to cut occurs, they snap the elastic. This causes a small amount of pain and, sometimes, this action satisfies the urge to cut.

Take care of yourself and do keep talking.

Do you want to stop? What do you need to do to achieve your goal?
