In January of 1970, Pierre Trudeau's Liberal government introduced "The White Paper on Metric Conversion." The paper argued that most of the world's countries were already using metric and the United States would eventually convert, so Canada should go metric soon. The leaders of all the political parties in the House of Commons supported it at the time. However, not all segments chose to change. Much like the US, we didn't cotton to change.

1970
>>Welcome to Canada's metrication completion page! Canada formally adopted the modern metric system (the Système International d'Unités or SI) in 1970. It has been over 30 years since we were first introduced to the metre, litre, kilogram, and Celsius. It is not an exageration to say that we are now all familiar with metric. Nearly 10-million Canadians have learned metric in public school since the mid-1970's while the rest have learned metric from the media, marketplace, and government. It is time that we finally finish what we started and complete metric conversion in Canada.<<

Around 1975.....unfortunately the damage was already done as I was already in junior high.....to this day I still convert all metric measurements to Imperial so that I totally understand how much I'm looking at...especially at the grocery store...it sounds funny asking for 454 grams of hamburger when what you really want is just a pound!

In the very early 1980's. However, having said that, Canada has not yet totally converted, just look at the grocery pricing.
