Better than Intel Pentium M, Viiv is just a product label, not a processor classification and could refer to any combination of processor, memory and graphics within the Viiv spec.
It depends on the model of the Athlon which I assume is a 64x2 but which slot, which model (3800+, 4400+, 4600+?) in which case it really doesn't matter. If it's a socket 939 model you have limited upgradeability as they are moving to AM2 slots.
Whatever the case, the Intel Core2 Duo processors put the smackdown on AMD offerings at lower prices too. AMD is planning a price cut and surprise surprise, is planning to launch some new processors so we'll just have to wait and see but for now Intel is the performance champ with dirt cheap prices, who knew that Intel could pull it off?
