It is good that you are still reading your bible.
I too was disillusioned with some things at the church I was attending. For many years I did just as you are doing. I stayed home and read my bible.
About 10 months ago, I felt the need for the fellowship I once enjoyed at church before some of the members chose to make it a church of politics.
So, I went looking for a church that was open, friendly and where I could here the word of God from the pulpit. I didn't want ear candy telling me what a wonderful person I was. I wanted to hear what I should do to have a close relationship with God.
I found a wonderful church where people can come as they are, hear what they need to hear even though it sometimes makes them uncomfortable, and KNOW that they can find forgiveness for any mistakes in their life. HALLELUJAH!!!
At first I'll admit I thought it odd to see men wearing shorts to church, and some women in sweat pants, but I heard what I knew was the truth in that church and suddenly, clothing meant nothing to me. (It did seem a bit disrespectful but I later learned those people had health problems. The guy in shorts has a terrible back problem and pants pull on him causing excruciating pain)
A close relationship with God is your best way to improve your understanding of what God needs from you. You can get that just by reading His word. But, I also find strength in fellowship with others.
I recently purchased a New International Version to help me with some parts of the KIng James that were a bit difficult to understand. I've been told there is also an American standard that has modern English but did not find one in the book store.
I certainly hope this helps you in your quest to understand God's will for your life.

You know what? God is everywhere and if you find him/her at home that's great. I had been going to church for 23 years and never felt God's presence. If anything, I always felt very uncomfortable parying and praising with a bunch of people. They're always looking at everyone, don't think they're not. How do you think they come up with the same praying and praising postures?
Almost 2 years ago I felt I connected very strongly with God when I was at the beach. Ever since, whenever I feel overwhelmed, or just wanna have some one-on-one time with God, and even most Sundays, I just go there and look at the ocean, and the trees, and the sky, and the reefs, feeling the sand and the wind and the Sun, there's no question for me that God is there, and so I just lay there and talk to him. You know, say wassup, thanks for everything and could I get some help in such and such situation. That's it. God's wherever you feel the presence.

It is important, I actually go to Church on Saturday nights. It is great. Sunday I use as a day of rest and praying and studying the Bible should be daily...but do not forsake the fellowship of the believers...we are the church...it is not about a building or a denomination...a relgion. It is about a relationship with God. BE CAREFUL, do not rationalize yourself out of going to church.

church is always good ,if you don't go i feel thats alright and i'm a catholic but your personal relationship is the most important thing people can go to church every sunday and never pray any other time or do good, it would be nice if you make a personal area with a bible and some freshflowers surrounded with family pict ures or white candles whatever you like or you can just keep it plain an simple clean your house let the sun in through your windows and kneel and pray when your at home.
If you dont want to do that i believe if you tell him your sorry he will forgive you and understand as long as you mean it

I echo your frustrations on finding a church..a faith that you are comfortable with.. It literally took me 8 yrs after my first born to find -finally a church where I and my catholic husband are happy in. The compromise was a congregational church.. non- denominational which is run by The United Church of Christ..the UCC. And of course its still as important to find a pastor that you enjoy as well..-which we are very fortunate to have our's be a very open minded, down to earth guy..
And yes for the first time in my life I have been, (in this setting)- a practicing christian.. that I do enjoy getting up, with or without my family to go.. I receive such blessings and trials during the week I have come to be relieved I can be there come Sunday morning!..
this morning my eldest with her trumpet preformed a duet and a solo during the interlude and during the offering.
so yes I have been to church this morning and I think Its great that you keep looking for a church community that you enjoy as well..
good luck..and God Bless!

Jesus said, and I'm paraphrasing here "2 people gathered in My Name"
In essence, you and myself are having a church service at this moment.
I did not go to church today, nor do I ever go to any church. I used to as a child.
Also, if you do the right things all the time and have unlimited faith in God, you're on the right track.
As far as church being important, it is a place for 'true' Christians to gather in His name for fellowship and worshiping together, but going to any specific church on Sunday mornings seems to be a social event and to see what kind of 'new' car others buy and also, it seems, is a 'fashion' show of your apparel.

I am a Christian. I love church. But unfortunately we didn't get to go this morn. The med I'm on makes me extra sleepy and living on a fixed income we also have to watch gas. The church is 8 miles from me. And gas is out of sight!
The same thing has happened to me many many times.! Honestly I felt like a jinx!
When my husband I and I first met it was important that we found a church that WE liked and could go to together. So we did and all was fine until the pastor had a heart attack. We like the new one, but we moved to Georgia. Where we like the pastor but after his wife passed away they fired him. So we like the next guy too, but.. we didn't like the way they would smoke on the front doorsteps. So we tired all kinds of different churches with the same problem every time.
Well after my mother passed away, we decided to move back to Maine.
We went back to the same church with the same pastor but there was some sort of problem that I wasn't privy too, and he was resigning. We dind't like the next one so we went from one church to antoher, and finally someone suggested "why not go to such and such church? I've heard good things aobut it"?
So we tried it out and we loved it. And have been there ever since.
Seems like everyone I like leaves. My daughters Sunday School teacher left. They really had to travel some 15 miles ea way, but then her counsleor - whom we both trusted - left her job - she later came back part time in a different postition.
A long time ago, there was a company that I liked that fixed furnaces. And I thought they had good prices and good work, and they went out of buisness!
So we started buying our oil from antoher company - and they got bought out by someone else!
So my advise to you is to find a church you like. See if you can carpool or something.. But don't forsake the fellowship of other believers. Please don't.

Hi.
I am a Seventh-Day Adventist Christian. I go to church on Sabbaths - Saturday.
Why we are called SDA:
The seventh day of the week is Saturday. The first day of the week is Sunday. Monday is the first day of the work week. God rested on the seventh day. Jesus also observed the Sabbath.
Adventists mean we're looking forward to the second coming of Christ.
Anyway, have you tried our church? Try looking for a local one in your area.
God Bless.

We did not go this morning because my wife worked overnight and she needed her sleep. Plus, our pastor quit and we haven't been very comfortable there yet. THey just got a new pastor and he will be starting in 2 weeks. We are going to give him a shot, and see if we are staying. It is hard for my wife to leave because she has been at this church for a very long time. However, we found another church, very nearby, that we love, and I would love to start going there regularly. Dilemmas, dilemmas.
