We have family friends that are first generation Mexican Americans. Since they are legal, they are able to take trips to Mexico and back. The younger fellow commented that Mexico is mostly desert, and they had to put nets over their little house to protect from scorpions. And they still had them in the house. Is the desert climate the worst thing? Or is it corruption? Or is it they like America in general? Or other?

Mexico is BROKE AS HELL because of the government. The gorvernment is corrupt they steal all the money that should be used to better Mexico. Also Police Departments and Judges are currupt they let out some of the worst criminals and Drug dealers with the Excuse that there wasn't enough evidence. Mexico is not mostly desert only about 15% of Mexico is desert and most of mexico is actually beautiful. I think that the main reason people immigrate is that there aren't any good paying jobs in Mexico and the fact that alot of the people that are born poor die poor. There odd of someone poor becoming rich or just better their life a little bit are very low. School charge people for books. Schools in Mexico aren't like the ones in the USA, In Mexico you have to but your own books and calculator. The only thing that the schools provide is teachers and Class rooms. Also to attend school you must wear uniforms that are expensive. So alot of poor people don't attend school. People in Mexico think that coming to the USA is the best thing to do and for some it is.

When you've got desert, and you've got ocean, and you've got sunshine, all 3 of which are to be found in Mexico, what you have is an engineering problem, as far as transforming arid land into farmland.

The ocean has an almost never-ending supply of soil that could be utilized to do soil treatment. It also has a lot of water. The sun desalinizes billions of gallons per day of seawater through evaporation. There's no law on god's green earth saying you can't develop technology to help that process along. Some already have, other arid desert places have done exactly that, transforming sandy wastes into habitable areas, at least in part.
Stuff like that takes lots of money, and hard work in the hot, hot sun. Since Mexicans are RENOWNED for their work ethic, that last one shouldn't be a problem. The rest of it, seeking money and investors etc., that one might take some work.

Scorpions can be repelled with chemicals. They also can't crawl through solid walls, they're not vested with magical powers. So, in the case of that family, they need to work on their house.

The government is corrupt and the drug lords buy them out. How many times have you heard that a load of cocaine was busted in Mexico city or a load of marijuana in Monterrey? You don't because the drug lords have free reign of Mexico. it,s not until they get to the border towns where the trouble starts.
As far as what some one said about Mexico being desert, it,s like anywhere else in America, they have desert,s mountains, oceans and beautiful country sides. Mexico would be a great place to live if the government wasn't corrupt and they took care of their people.

You are asking the wrong question. Humans naturally would live at a bare subsistence level as everyone in the whole world did for maybe 100,000 years and much of the world still does. The better question is: What is it that led certain nations and cultures to become wealthy and technologically advanced? Do some research in the fields of history & economics & when you can answer that question, you will have the answer to yours.

Widespread institutional corruption is probably the biggest factor. Many African nations are rich in oil, diamonds, etc. but remain dirt poor (except for their leaders) for the same reason.

Other factors include the productivity-sapping heat, poor infrastructure, socialist economic policies, civil strife, and a lackluster educational system.

Mexicans as a whole seem to be a hard-working people. They're just stuck in a bad environment.

50 percent of people in mexico live below the poverty line, which means they dont make enough money to feed their family. what you would earn in a day say $50 for 8 hours they earn in a week for 12 hours a day. it is very bad and yes its because of bad politics and corruption. they always screw with the poorest people

It's a combination of things. Mexico is not all desert by the way.

One of the main reason Mexico isn't as wealthy as the USA is because Mexico didn't have a period of huge European immigration.

The Europeans that came to the USA brought with them the technology and science that most of our advancements are built upon today.

i'd say it's corruption, exploitation of natural resources where only a privileged few benefit from it, and no welfare system to depend on for help. when ur family is starving, there're no prospects any where , and no help from the government, what would u do? incidently, most illegals are hard-working ppl who don't want to depend on gov. handouts; they just want a chance at a better life.

The first thing you must understand is the freedom that this country offers. Mexico calls itself the united states of Mexico but, it has had one corrupt form of government after another for years. The value of a peso is a joke compared to an American dollar. Education is reserved for the privileged in general. They still run on an ancient class system brought over from Spain their indigenous people are treated as 3rd class citizens (2nd class is for women) The concept of making it in business depends too heavily on bribes. Drugs are a major source of their GNP - Do you want me to keep going? Mexicans know they are better off here.
