for a better life and assume they want to take over this country?? Why is it that when the early settlers came here, illegally and took the land by force, none of you get offended by that? Illegals can only be accused of taking jobs, not taking your life, its a bit hypocritical no? And, by that logic, if illegals do come here and take over this country, be it by force or economically, then your not going to complain, right? Since the early European settlers did it, to the American Indian, it didn't seem to offend you, right? Some how that was OK?

Truth be told, ITS wrong on both sides of the issue....To come here illegally and to come and invade a country....

Oh I suppose the early settlers didn't break the law, when they killed Indians for their land?

1. When there are too many immigrants it does take away jobs. And, when many immigrants are illegal, their employers know it and pay lower wages. So not only are there fewer jobs available for citizens and residents, wages are depressed.

2. Many people are zenophobic, it's some sort of tribal instinct to dislike foreigners. The more foreign born people there are, the more this becomes a factor.

3. This is a hate - others polarizing issue that can be exploited by the political parties, primarily, right-wing Republicans.

4. It gives some people the excuse to believe they are defending their homeland, their culture, their way of life. This satisfies the ego and macho urges of some people. They can "defend" borders, the American "way of life" with little risk to their personal safety, feel like they are doing something important..

A sovereign nation has the right to protect and defend it's borders. Regardless of the past and who owned the land then, it is the here and now that counts. The US can and should capture and deport any people trying to cross the border illegally.

Only those people from around the world who legally apply and are accepted for immigration or guest worker status (green card) officially should be allowed in. These people have done it properly and deserve their place in this country.

If the others would stop running away from their own countries and instead, go home and make a difference there, they could improve the quality of life at their legal residence.

As far as the indians go, I think that is why the indians now have their own nations spread out across the US.
Now as far as the illegals go the thing that is upsetting me is not that the illegals come here to work. Anyone who wants to work here should be allowed to work here. In fact most illegals work harder and longer than a lot of Americans.
What upsets me is that they come here illegally, work for cash under the table, dont pay into "The System" then get married or have children here so they can stay and drain the systems resources from Americans who really need that, and they or their families have payed into the system to support it. Something for nothing is not a good thing and that in short is why I dont like the illegals being here.

Why do we have to relive history, are there any graves that aren't going to get dug up, here? What's happened here is that because of years and years of poor enforcement, no one's really taken the border seriously for ages. Now, suddenly, people realize there's a problem, and the struggle NOW is to figure out how to handle the problem the right way.

Mexico lost a war to the United States. That means the southwestern US belongs to the US, not to Mexico. This means that mexican citizens that are in the US illegally have done something wrong, I leave it to you to decide what to do about that.
Yes, we are sons and daughters of immigrants, the vast majority of which came to the United States LEGALLY. This is the Big Point that people don't seem to want to see.

The US is a nation of laws. If you don't like that, please pack up and leave. Our immigration laws need to be observed, at all levels of government, and Mexico needs to stand up and be a little more independent and self-supporting, and as time goes by, completely self-supporting.

I think it's kind of really important to consider what we do, and how we do it as we go along, here. Reliving history or making specious claims against other people's countries isn't going to cut the mustard, here. Since Mexico has the most people that are in our country illegally, the problem needs to get addressed with Mexico FIRST, and as PARTNER, not as OPPONENT(Although the latter seems to be the default scenario). If they can't see that they're causing us some problems with all of this, then they're not really looking at it, or they're not being honest with us.

Something's gotta give, here. The US is going deeper in debt each year, infrastructure's getting overloaded, and I think we'd be much better friends with Mexico if they showed some signs of being self-supporting and less reliant on the US for the support of their people. Yes, Mexico can grow its' own food. Yes, Mexico can have its' own high-tech sector. Yes, Mexico can build its' own business schools. Yes, Mexico can provide public services to its' own citizens. Yes, Mexico can patrol their side of the border. None of these things are impossible, but none of them will come about, either, until we pull the plug on all the sob-story rhetoric, either.

This is the 21st century. Come on, Mexico! Pull your socks up!

The problem is that there are LEGAL ways to come here and ILLEGAL ways to come here.

Now I will readily admit that the LEGAL way has plenty of problems and needs to be fixed, and I don't believe we should bar people from coming to the country unless there is a good reason.

However, I'd like to point out a few things:

1) Every country in the world has immigration laws, and a lot are stricter than that of the US. Why is it the US that always gets singled out?

2) The difference between a LEGAL immigrant and an ILLEGAL immigrant is that the LEGAL immigrant contributes to society, benefits from federally funded social programs, and pays taxes. An ILLEGAL immigrant contributes to society, benefits from federally funded social programs, AND DOES NOT PAY TAXES. As a result, no matter how much they contribute (I will not downplay their contribution, but let's be realistic people, the legal residents are contributing just as much), they are leeching away benefits at the cost to the LEGAL American taxpayers. Yes, ILLEGALS pay sales tax. And that's about it. What about Federal Income Tax? State Income Tax? Social Security? Medicare? Most don't have drivers licenses and insurance, which reduce state income (registration and licenses) and cost the LEGAL residents even more (increased insurance rates because of uninsured motorists).

I have no problems with immigrants coming to America. I have no problems with them becoming Americans (face it, unless you are 100% American Indian, you are at least a part immigrant). But the fact remains they are ILLEGAL, just as much as a person who is speeding, selling dope, burlarizing houses or breaking any of our other LAWS. And because of their ILLEGAL behavior, LEGAL citizens pay for it.

the thing is this!! it is easy for people to critisize when in good situation, but if they were in the same situation as illigal people who just want to work and make a better wage chances are they would hope over the border as well.

I agree that the immigration needs to fix things; however i dont know what would be the right way to solve the problem. I guess im not so critical because it is not affecting me, but truth is in the later generations if hispanic people keep comming here illigally it will eventually drag the economy down. Which will affect my kids and there kids and so on. I know they (illigal people) mean no harm. Thats why i dont say bad things about them. But this is going to become even bigger of a problem if it isnt fixed

No, I think it is not hypocritical, since we do not subscribe to that today. If we did we would be annexing the countries we have fought in.

We are absolutely going to fight force with force. Do you really think we would lose?

Also, long ago the Indians didn't have to share their schools or pay for our people's education or health care. Those are services we have set up for our own people, and the services are being stolen by people who shouldn't even be here.

That is a huge difference you ignore. No?

And Diana, they have no 'right' to be here at all. The 'free' health care and services they come for, that their own government considers it too expensive to provide for them, we pay for. Therefore we limit how many poor people can come.

Socal - well said.

Illegals show a lack of respect for my country and it's laws. Regardless of their motives, they are wrong and should be deported. Speaking of hypocritical...I don't know of one single nation that doesn't have a sense of sovereignty and want it protected. Contrary to your beliefs, illegals motivation is greed. When a person is in need of work they usually travel within the borders of their own country. I wasn't around to be offended before...but I am around now...and i am offended now...all in all it is better in the long run for the health of these countries which cannot provide an American standard of living, to change their laws and prosecute the greedy people that are ruining these countries and the lives of those who live within them.

...Socal....great job...

because ppl are under the false notion that the only reason all illegals come here is to get on welfare. maybe some do, but most don't. the only thing they could be accused of getting for free are the crappy, low-paying jobs that neither you nor i want to do. the minute legals start filling in these jobs, then the illegals wouldn't come any more because these jobs would no longer exist! think before u start generalizing ppl.

a lot of people say "they should come here legally, they should apply for citizenship" well that is called ignorance. They come in illegally because they cant come in no other way. first you have to have a sponser or else no chance well that is only if you win the green card lottery. and once you have a sponcer it depends on your case but it will usually take about 10-15 years and by that time their family would be already dead of starvation
