A dog doesn't mensturate. They have heat cycles. Most dogs have them once every 6 months but some dogs only have them once a year some have them 3-4 times a year. They can start as young as 4-5 months or as old as 18 - 24 months. The average age is 6 months. Hopefully you will get her spayed BEFORE she has a heat cycle. It wil lbe much better for her health wise and she'll also be happier as will you. There won't be any hormone fluctuations, no mess to contend with,no having to watch her constantly while in heat to make sure she doesn't get bred, no fighting off male dogs who show up on your doorstep, no worries about uterine/ovarian cancer, no risk of pyrometria infections, a dramaticly reduced risk of mamamry cancer, etc

Large breed dogs usually go into heat at 7-9 months of age. It is not unusual for Labs to go into their first heat at 12-18 months old.
