Israel could increase its annual water supply by 800 MCM (approximately 40% of its annual water consumption in 1993) if it had continued access to the Litani through continued/permanent occupation of southern Lebanon.(38) Another reason for Israel to want the Litani is that, especially along the Israeli coast, many aquifiers are stressed and their water is increasingly brackish.(39)
Chaim Weizmann, head of the World Zionist Organization, wrote (around 1919-1920) to Prime Minister David Lloyd George that Lebanon was "well-watered" and that the Litani was "valueless to the territory north of the proposed frontiers. They can be used beneficially in the country much further south." He concluded the Litani was "essential to the future of the Jewish national home.'" Yet the British and French mandate powers kept the Litani entirely in Lebanon.(40)

Israel does not need water from lebanon. What it has a right to is to defend herself. What everyone here forgets is that 2 israeli soldiers were kidnapped and taken across the border by islamic terrorists whom have been protected by the lebanese govt. This in itself is an act of war. In other words, lebanon has given hezbollah free reign over south lebanon to attack israeli civilians and security forces with missiles and unguided rockets as they please. If the people of lebanon want the war to stop then they should stop supporting islamic terrorists and the terrorists themselves should stop attacking the israeli's as it is them that is holding everything back.

Yes, this is a provocative question. It raises questions about long term Israeli objectives. It may offer an explanation for Israel's apparently stupid actions as viewed on a tactical or humanitarian level.
Personally, I have though for years that the next Middle East regional war would be about water rights. Could this be it?

They have things called Desalinization plants now. I don't think that is why they are doing this stuff. Syria and Iran have been rattling their sabers now for sometime about them being there. Yasser Arafat died last year and a new Islamist power had to take over the PLO. This is a way for Hezbollah to show the Muslims that they are a force to be reckoned with in dealing with Israel.
