I agree that you need to check out any health issues that might be causing your cat to not feel well and therefore depressed. After you have cleared up that issue you might consider a kitty companion for him.

Kittens are not always the best choice with an older cat and it could work beautifully. There is always a chance it won't work out as you might like it to.

Most humane societies and rescue organisations are in desperate need of foster homes during the "kitten season". Could you consider taking on a pair of kittens? You usually only have them for three weeks at most. Also mother cats with kittens still nursing need a safe and nuturing place to be as they wean their kittens. If so, you will be able to judge your cat's reaction to this energetic presence in your house. Sometimes foster homes are also needed for an older cat (maybe healing from a broken leg or some other injury that has been treated) and they need a few weeks or a month before returning for adoption. Many people end up keeping their fosters and you always have the option to do that or not.

Hope you might be able to try something like this. I do hope your kitty is not ill and you must eliminate that possibility first.

he is now middle aged. cats live to be around 20. anyway we have a 11(in sept) cat and we got a kitten back in may. the 2 of them play, and when the older cat is done playing there is some hissing and sometimes a small fight. the younger one is learning when play time is over and he goes and plays with his toys. the older male takes a nap. this happens 4 or 5 times a day. the 2 of them seem very happy.

Well, getting him another cat could cause jealousy. But, I think you should give it a try. If you do not want another cat, give him some toys, and LOTS of attention. If you do not see any different results, take him to the vet. And if he doesn't like the cat you get him. Then separate them or give the cat away to another loving family. Try to find a cat that is the same gender and age, but if you think your cat will work good with the opposite gender, you can do that too!

Well, first make sure he's healthy.

Yes, bringing another cat into the household might cause jealousy, if he's been the only cat. Talk to your vet.

Wish I could be more helpful.

my cat has been like that lately as well but I think mine is just getting old. She's been slowing down a lot lately...we even had to bring her food dish to her the other day. But my cat is also 18.

getting another cat would help but a kitten would not
maybe you could have it go to a friends house that has a cat and they could play together

i think that your cat might need a friend, so i suggest that if ur cat is a boy, get him a girl kitten friend, and vice versa

It might be part of the natural aging process. Spend extra time with him, playing and cuddling.
