Hi!

Blue screen of death heh? Never good and always fun to try and slove this problem.

First thing to do is the proper updates of your windows edition. Then update your anti-virus and perform a full scan. If you don't have an anti-virus, you can download AVG for free from www.download.com.

You can also download(for free), install and run ad-aware by lavasoft. Their web site is www.lavasoft.com. This software will look for spyware and other nasty stuff you got from the net.

After you've done all thoses free things....and because you said the PC is rather old, you can think about switching the hard drive with 7200RPM for about 90$(depends on the size of the disc). I suggest MAXTOR. They have an awesome waranty. I was able to get a 5 years old busted HD for a brand new on. I paid only the post fees.

You can also add RAM, again depending of the capabilities, the price should be between 45 and 90$

You have to stay patient with this great-grand father of PC, he's earned is retirement. So do the updates and the little upgrade and he will be among us for an extra while.

Hope this helps.

Some details would help people answer this question.

What Operating System are you running?

What processor? 486 / Pentium (II, III, IV)

How much RAM memory?

Have you always had this problem, or did it start just recently?

If it started recently, then did the problems coincide with the installation of some new hardware or software?

How long since you ran ScanDisk or Defrag?

Is your Virus Protection up-to-date?

Do you have a Firewall in place?
