Take the St. John's Wort... it won't hurt you. Be careful about taking too much however, in the middle ages people who took too much St. John's Wort reported seeing angels and devils. I doubt that would do much for anxiety if you started to hallucinate (or maybe they're real).

most of the previous answers are right on the money.
However, you can not take st. johns wort and a prescription drug for depression/anxiety at the same time.
A few things that worked well for me ( I had very similar problems)
was the st johns wort, sam-e,
but what helped the most was co enzyme q-10 and 5-htp the 5htp is a product with tryptophan in it the same that makes you sleepy after eating turkey. it helps the brain to produce more serotonin. which keeps you from having the anxiety. anti depression DRUG cause brain to absorb the little bit of serotonin a depressed person has but the 5htp helps you create more. so the natural stuff works better actually. skip the drugs. they only cause other side effects.
Also 5htp taken at bedtime helps you sleep.
Good luck

St Johns Wort works very well for anxiety. Also, try some melatonin for sleep problems. You can find them at most grocery or drug stores, just follow the directions, or talk to the pharmacist.

St. johns wort is something that should be taken as little as possible. Your need is not for a drug to relieve anxiety, but to get to the root of your anxiety. T- you need to talk this out with someone. Its not going away by ignoring it.

St. John's Wort didn't work for me.. that doesn't mean it won't work for you. There's no harm in trying it. I take Ativan (a prescription) on an as needed basis.

Try Sam-E or the prescription drugs Xanax or Atavan. You can also take Just Sleep for insomnia. It is not habit forming.

I don't know if you have told your doctor about how that pill made you feel... but if you haven't... talk to him/her about it. Unfortunately, when it comes to finding the right type of medication that will work for you, it takes a few trials. If your willing to go the medication way it is a hit and miss. It might also be becuase you have to take the medication for awhile before it starts working properly. I do believe if the pill did not make you feel right talk to your doctor. Go out and also get some info on holistic medicine and go see a naturopath. I know that St. John's Wort does work on depression and mild forms of anxiety, but it has to be taken everyday. It is like a snowball effect, it takes awhile to kick in. There is other things you need to take as well...like different vitamins and herbs that would help your anxiety/depression. That is why if you want to go the natural way I suggest you talk to a naturopath. I was on pills by my doctor a few years back and I could not handle the way they made me feel and not feel. I decided to go to a naturopath and go the natural way. It took me a couple of months to get back on the right path...but I feel and look better today. But that was the way to go for me. You have to see which way will be good for you. If you want you can go both ways medication and the natural way. Do talk to your doctor and tell him your situation...he/she might be able to help you out in other ways. As for myself I do know a few things that helped me before, during & after the things that I was taking kicked in...sort-to-speak. I listened to music. Music can be effective in reducing anxiety. I talked to some close friends & family. Talking things out can diffuse anxiety. Stay away from coffee, black tea, cola, chocolate, or anything else that contains caffeine. Avoid foods containing refined sugar or other simple carbohydrates. Get regular exercise. Any type of exercise will work - a brisk walk, bicycle, riding, swimming, or whatever fits your individual lifestyle. I know you said you can't sleep at night...so try to rest whenever you can. I hope I have not overwhelmed you with all that I have written...though I do hope that some of it helps. Do talk to your doctor and if your up to it a naturopath. Good luck!!!
