The n-word is a racial slur, plain and simple. When black people call each other the n-word, they are in effect saying to each other "We get along so well that I can call you the n-word and not get my butt beat." :D Its like when your family gives you a certain, embarrassing nickname. If someone at work found out about it and started calling you that also, you might not like it.
Also the use of the n-word among black people is a very clear example of black people internalizing the racism and discrimination that they have faced in this country. Its like a kidnap victim who becomes friends with their captor and starts using their language. At some point black people started to use that language against each other. Even young black people trying to co-op the word is a sign of trying to justify their use of it, because that is easier that trying to discourage the use of it.
Its like when women call each other the b-word. But that doesn't mean that they call their mothers that, or use it with everyone. All black people don't call other black people the n-word. So going up to just any black person saying that is wrong. Even among black males, they know who they can and can't address as an N...
What is very interesting to me as a black women is why white people always want to call someone the n-word. When Jesse Jackson coined "African-American" white people didn't want to use it, but you all are just dying to call a black person a n-word. Considering how negative that word is, even if you can't understand why someone else is self-abusing, why would white people want to engage in that sort of racism?

I also think it's because waaay back when slavery was still around the white slave masters used the n-word to belittle the slaves as they were being whipped. It's sort of an ultimate disrespect.
This is also the same reason why most white people don't really care if they're called cracker or honky. Because your ancestors weren't called cracker or honky while they were being whipped, belittled, and ultimately regarded as trash. Just my 2 cents.

I'm not black but it's a right of passage kind of thing between their own people. It's something they as a people have that we supposibly can't say. I don't say it, don't care to, I have a friend that literally thinks he's black because he grew up in a ghetto, so he says it all the time. I'm waiting for the day some blackie shoots him because he says it because thats what they do to anyone else because most of them are biggots.

I doubt that more than a very small number of black people hate anyone, even those who are stupid enough to call them names and treat them with contempt.
