uhh...whats a raffle?

a raffle is when a bunch of people buy into something and get something out of it. does that make sense? like for instance, you buy a ticket to support something(like a charity) then you get a chance to win a doorprize or something.

Tickets are sold for a period of time, and then one is drawn out and declared the winner of whatever it is that's being raffled off.

As Kirskitti said, it is a 'draw' where several, sometimes thousands of tickets are sold, and one is drawn and it is the winner of the published prize.
