Well you cant really go wrong with a mut...becuase muts are good dogs, and cheap if not free. but you probably want to go with a dog like you said, thats not too big, small to medium. But if you give it alot of attention and train it well espessially when its a small pup and growning up, you will be fine no matter what dog you get. but its real important to train it good when its a puppy.

Acquiring a puppy takes a lifetime commitment on your part. Dogs can live upwards of 15 years if they are healthy, so it is not a decision to be made lightly. It is essential that you choose to share your life with a dog for the right reasons, otherwise you can make both yourself and the dog miserable.
Children are not going to be the primary caretaker, you are. Most children are not ready for that kind of responsibility, and children also get bored quickly once the novelty wears off. If buying a dog for your children is just a handy excuse to get one for yourself, then by all means, please continue shopping, but be aware that possibly every minor and major chore that the dog involves will fall on your shoulders. Getting a puppy for your children, is the WRONG reason to get a dog! If you go ahead with this, you will need to teach your children to respect the pup. Puppies are not toy's! They need care and attention, but they also require rest.Your children are not really old enough to understand a puppies needs and wants. Please be aware also that puppies bite, and need constant training in the correct manner. Will you have time for this? If you intend to get this pup for your children to "play" with, you are being very cruel. An untrained dog is usually one that ends up in a shelter, through no fault of its own. I urge you to think very carefully what bringing a puppy into your lives means.

Shelter mutt's make the best pets.
Adopting from a shelter saves a life and you get lots of "extras" for one low price. Especially important when you get a puppy. Their first shots, worming medication, and spay or neuter can cost a bundle, but are included in the adoption fee.
Consider an adult. They are much less work than a puppy and in some cases you can get a trained one. No house breaking, or obedience training.
If you, or your kids, have your hearts set on a particular breed, there are specialty rescue groups for that breed. Veterinarians have the numbers.
Good Luck

Go to Yahoo! and type in "dog breed selector" many quizzes will pop up that will ask you questions about your lifestyle and preferences. then you will get results about the breed of dog that suits you the best. also buy from a responsible breeder or adopt. DO NOT go to a pet store or backyard breeder. Also listen to everyone else and get the puppy for you, not just the kids, way too many good dogs end up in the shelter and are euthanized once the "newness" wears off

I don't think the kind of dog matters TOO much. But labs, any kind always seem to have great temperment. But it's more how you train the dog than what breed it is. No bad dogs, just bad owners. Some dogs do have a lot more energy than others of course, little jack terriers are nice and small but have a ton of energy, wiener dogs tend to be less hyper and are also smaller dogs. But of course any dog needs to be excersised to let out the energy, that helps keep them from going nuts, and driving you nuts.

You're not getting the kids a puppy unless THEY will be the ones taking full care of him. It's YOU that will be doing the bulk of the work! Therefore, get the best kind of puppy for you. Your kids will help, but most of the work in caring for a dog will be in your hands, not theirs.

I actual have a choc lab / rottie combination and a couple of toddlers, one is 4 the different is 6. We actual have a goat and a cat. Our has in simple terms approximately no preychronic, so he gets alongside great with the different animals. he's all started to get shielding over 'his' goat these days, and has consistently been shielding over the cat. From the day he met the youngsters they have been decrease than his protection. He is familiar with theyre the cubs of the %. and on a similar time as he doesnt attempt to nicely suited their strikes, he does shop different animals and unknown human beings from moving into our backyard whilst theyre exterior. He does have a pair issues, yet theyre in simple terms primary domestic dog issues. First he's very oral-and he has a large mouth. He has ultimately found out that he will obtain no petting except he's keeping a toy, yet for awhile he would nip somewhat whilst carried away-he became into consistently mushy with the youngsters, even though it scared them. 2d he's very massive and intensely energetic. Granted he's no longer even a twelve months old, so as that too ought to pass. He now and back gets somewhat too energetic and IMO performs too tough. Ive seen no situation that isnt correctable and he consistently straightens up as quickly as he realizes how he's appearing (now no longer demands a command, he's familiar with the thank you to act he in simple terms gets too excited). He does dazzling the two on and stale leash. He each so often pulls whilst an person is keeping the leash, yet my 4 twelve months old is in a position to hold it without situation-the dogs is often very mushy with young ones till he gets too excited enjoying. bear in mind that mutts arent like organic breeds. Yours ought to finally finally end up no longer something like mine, yet consistent with him i think of its a great combination. ___ Being a rottie has no longer something to do with it--no dogs must be left on my own with a new child. Too many toddlers dont comprehend the thank you to act around canines and could by probability do some thing to impression them.

all puppies are good for kids......its when the pooch gets to be adult that one wonders if it will be nice to kids. so i believe you should check into how ''good natured'' a certain breed of dog is towards kids when its full grown. like i heard that cocker spaniels are mild natured and are good with kids. i know beagles are and you also what a breed of dog that will take to house training easy like i read somewhere that dachshunds are notorious for not wanting to learn to do their business outside. so ..i would ask what breed is gentle with kids when they're adult dogs. and remember,,no matter how mild a dog can be...if its mistreated in any way....the dog loses its gentleness.........

Boston terrier, or not a dog- it is a big, BIG responsibility. They will leave you with the dirty work. If you want them to gwt a pet, I'd go with a hamster, etc.
But if you are SET on getting them a dog, a boson terrier, jack russel, or a beagel.
Good luck.
