I was confused too, but think of it this way: New York City is huge and has millions of people. It consists of five counties/boroughs: Kings (Brooklyn), Queens, New York (Manhattan), Bronx, and Richmond (Staten Island). New York City ranks number one in the most populated city of the United States. It consists of a population of 8,008,278 (2000 census). Currently Brooklyn is the borough with the largest population with 2,465,326 souls; then comes Queens with 2,229,379; Manhattan with 1,537,195; the Bronx with a 1,332,650; and finally Staten Island with 443,728.
Each of these areas have their own central government, but all are considered to be part of New York City. Here's a map that shows where the different boroughs are.

You can see that Manhattan (the island you usually think of as New York) is bounded by the Hudson River and the East River.
To the west of New York City is New Jersey. It's boundary to the east is Nassau County and farther north, Connecticut.
I hope that helps a little

NYC is made up of 5 boroughs:
Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, and Staten Island.
They're all part of New York City, even though some people think that only Manhattan is part of New York City, or differently.
The mailing addresses say New York, NY when referring to Manhattan. For Brooklyn, it's Brooklyn, NY. For Queens it's Queens, NY, etc.

Damn straight they are part of NYC. Harlem is a neighborhood. How is it possible for a neighborhood to be its own city? The Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island and Manhattan are the 5 boroughs of NYC, and since when does a borough count as a separate city? Besides NYC is not LA and thank God for that. L.A. sucks and its a dump.

A borough is an administrative division used in various countries. Usually a borough is a single incorporated town, but certain large city corporations or municipalities are subdivided into boroughs, which enables certain municipal functions to be carried out by the borough and thus providing it with a certain level of autonomy
