Life is suffering. Life will not be easy. There are many challenges and how one maintains a positive attitude in the face of such challenges is the measure of one's maturity and inner development.

I can't imagine what you did that was so terrible. These are the crimes/sins that I consider to be truly punishable only by God or karma (which comes down to the same in the end): pedophilia, murder, raping a close relative (incest), slaughtering innocents. The rest is sin on a relative scale in my opinion (I don't care whether the "fundies" agree with me or not), and you can deal with it. It might be tougher for you than for many of us, especially if you are a good person The tougher your challenges, the greater your growth. We're cheering for you!

my dear friend no body in this world is fallen and it is a sin to say that creation of God has committed sin. we only get different experiences to learn more and come closer to truth and God. two things are very important 1) do all your actions without attachment to its result, do only what is right thing to do and leave the result on fate. 2) watch your thoughts very carefully as if you are watching other person's thoughts, that would take you closer to the God. and if you follow this your karma of past and present would not affect you.

Do people still really believe that bad things (defined here roughly as "things people don't like") are punishment by a divine being for some action?

Because everything in this world acts by chance... karma is a figment of your imagination.

Also, if you are blaming karma then it's what you've done in your past life that is manifesting the bad in this one... not what you've done in this life.

Maybe you have evolved to the point where you no longer need to use religion as a crutch.

This is a good thing!

It was a simple chance, there is no fate or higher plan, don't listen to religious mumbo jumbo.

If you buy into the Bible, we've all fallen. Life's hard, get a helmet.
