MY Norton Anti Virus software takes a long time to scan my computer. It started out scanning in 30 minutes, then I added Norton System Works and it started taking 90 minutes which I attributed to the fact that it is now doing a more extensive scan. But about 2 weeks ago it started taking 2 1/2 hours and last night after 2 1/2 hours, it was still scanning Program Files so I cancelled it because I had to shut the computer and get to bed. Does anyone know what would cause this software to scan so slowly?

As a rule, Symantec Norton software programs are notorious for being resource hogs. But, Norton's Antivirus and System Works are excellent tools. Here are some suggestions to speed up Norton Antivirus scanning. First, delete all obsolete files. The more files on your computer the longer it takes to scan. If you are using Internet Explorer then use Windows' Disk Cleanup utility go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup. Make sure the following items are checked: download program files, temporary internet files, recycle bin and temporary files. You can choose to compress old files or not.

In addition, turn off automatic system hibernate or standby on your computer. You can do this by going to Start > Control Panel > Display > Screen Saver tab > [Power] button and make sure "turn off hard drive," "system hibernate" and "system standby" are set to Never.

Next, this is critical, you need to close any background programs before scanning. Norton Antivirus, like any software program, needs both memory and CPU. By closing other programs, more resources are available for Norton Antivirus. You can usually close programs in the taskbar by right clicking the icon and choosing close program (or something similar to that).

You hit the NAIL on the head. Norton Antivirus is fine. But add any of those other features, like System Works and Norton Internet Security, and it's slow as an old DOG.

I recommend running the plain version. Get your Firewall and Anti-spyware from somewhere else.

Use the Disk Cleanup that came with Windows. Use the DEFRAG that came with windows.

Uninstall any unused programs.

Use MSCONFIG to turn off any unused startup programs

sure. All antivirus classes take in reminiscence and CPU cycles and could shrink the fee of your computer. That reported, I even have seen comments that have been greater desirable than happy with the Norton 2009 product and how little it slowed down the computer. Norton/Symantec had earned an extraordinarily undesirable attractiveness for being the main important source hog in the antivirus family members and multiple human beings prevented it for this reason. Now that sales have slowed Norton is taking steps to regain the variety one spot. I choose Avira becuase its loose and works greater effectual than maximum in indepenent learn.

Actually your computer might have large amount of stored data on your hard disk. Because when the antivirus starts to scan the computer it scans for each and everything present in it to maintain the security and to minimize the threats.
You might be having many zipped or cab files that are compressed files. which takes long time to scan.
