There are many things in life that you need a license for.

Ironicly, the most important task any one of us will ever undertake, having and raising children, requires nothing other than conception.

If you look at the statistics on child abuse, child obesity & childhood poverty in this country, you wonder why there is not some sort of mandated course or instruction on the basics of raising children.

Should we require parents / couples / single moms / who are pregnant to undergo some sort of basic schooling on child rearing?

Lets hear from you!

I am all for that. From what I can see "ignorance breeds" and the child suffers.

I agree it would maybe cut down on child abuse, although there are many family's out there that their children are being abused in some way and no one knows cause they are respectable families or just hide it very well. but you can't take the right from ppl that don't have money to have kids just because they are in poverty. Though maybe limiting the number of kids per $ amount would help.
I think it would be a good free class to get the license it would help the parents that came from broken, abusive and drug homes on how to raise a child the correct way. During a class you can say anything to make it through i know there are some class that i have taken that i have bull*hited my way through to get the grade on the paper.

On what someone else said, the drug tests being taken.. They do take a drug test of the mother when she gets pregnant and if it comes back positive she will be tested again during the pregnancy. In the state i live in if it comes back positive when the baby is born, which i don't feel it should go this far but what can you do, the kids are taken away. I feel that if they have tested positive more then once after becoming pregnant then they should have the state on there butts right away checking on other kids, if any, and looking in on the living conditions at least once a week. But that is just me.....

I think you answered your own question at one point. Your wedding license also gives you the right morally and legally to bear children. Unfortunately you touched upon another fact. Some people don't have the love or knowledge to raise children. I think the knowledge comes from both the way you were raised and lifes trials and tribulations. Love comes from the heart. Concerning abuse.. there is no reason for it and if it's done a license to a jail cell with your own private license number written on your chest for all to see would be most deserving.

No I don't think there should be a test, look at all the people who have driver's license and committed HIT&RUN accidents they pass the test and yet they still have damaged, changed and even ended people lives. How about all the marriage licenses that were issued and the man or woman that was in the abusive marriage and ended up killing there spouse.Let's not forget the people that take the test at jobs asking if they would still from the company and ofcourse they pass the test but as soon as they think no one is looking they're stilling. So passing test and having licenses don't mean that you are capable of doing something it just proves that you know right from wrong people just choose the wrong.

Because the government should not govern what goes on with an individuals body. Driving and getting married are two legal acts requiring an agreement that requires citizens to abide by certain parameters set by the government. Having sex and pro-creating is not a legal act and never should be; (Even though the outcome is not always optimal.)

Because too many people have "surprise" (I won't use the word "accident") babies. So... then people would have to run to take the test .... and what if they fail? I know most the world would fail because there is a lot of crappy parents... so that would mean A.) Much more abortions and they would be FORCED by government... and/or B.) WAYYYY overpopulation of kids up for adoption... C.) A big rise in home (self induced) abortions (aka - using coat hangers, or falling down stairs...)

i dont know why you dont have to have a license but its a great idea and agree that both parents should have a licese before getting pregnant....yes i think it would help bring down child abuse, teenage pregnancy, pregnancy to people who have mental problems and shouldnt have kids. I think everyone who wants a license should take a free or low cost class on child care plus a drug test would be a good thing too.

There are inherent dangers associated with driving and marrying. However to bear children is a natural phenomenon, so it does not require any licence.

simple, you can't keep people from having sex, its a free country.and you're supposed to learn about raising children in government middle schools, and maybe high schools if you still need to, yet our government education system stinks.we're not a communist country or n. korea, or saudi arabia, we have basic freedoms, and we need to keep it that way.

Amen. The people who have kids should be given a thorough and rigorous IQ exam.
