My BF LOVES beagles, I plan to get him one after graduation as a gift to keep him company for college. I was wondering if besides regular vet visits and food and toys, how expensive is it to care for one seeing as college students have limited funds. are they especially prone to certain health issues? will they be good in a small space like an apartment? are they ok alone for a good chunk of the day, for classes and such? He may get me one too (for college aswell), I think they are adorable, so another question is: people say thier lovable, are they loyal too...are they as good of dogs as people say they are?

also, how expensive would it be to get a beagle as a puppy?

Dn't worry about his ability to care for a dog, it would be like his own child. he would play with it every spare second he gets.

if we break up, he will still keep the dpg, he isnt like that, just put it in a shelter because The dog came from me. I have no doubt in my mind that no matter what hapens between the two of us, that dogw ill still be well cared for. :) so that concern is moot.

He should not have a dog until he graduated from college. Part of being a grown-up is knowing when to wait for the things you want. A college student does not have the time or financial resources to care for a dog. Beagles are high energy dogs that BARK and DIG and RUN!!!! They are not stuffed animals and require a lot of care and time. If you are going to be in classes, working, and going out with friends (yeah, I was in college once too and know all about the amount of time spent being "social") there is not enough time to give a puppy the amout of time and care it requires. It would be very unfair to the puppy to expect it to be a part time pet with full time needs!!!!!!!

What would make you think that a puppy could be alone for a good part of the day???????? That is very selfish. You guys want one and are not really thinking about the needs of the puppy at all. You would end up with a puppy with behavior problem due to it's emotional and social needs not being met.
Also, the neighbors would not be too keen on hearing the pup HOWL all day!!!
Grow up, think about the long term, and plan for the puppy once graduation is over.

I think he would play with it ever spare minute he can. There is the thing, "EVERY SPARE MINUTE HE CAN". That is not ENOUGH for a puppy. The puppy is not going to know he has to go to class, or work. The puppy is going to know he isn't getting enough attention and will start acting out. This is not a couch potato breed!!!! This is a hunting breed!!!!!!!!!
Get Sea Monkeys. Or see if he can give enough attention to a Bonsai tree. If he can keep that alive for 6 months, he can try a puppy. They both require similar amount of care.

NEVER NEVER get a puppy from a pet store - you will pay too much for a lower quality pet... only get them from breeders or adoption like SPCA or beagle rescue
if you are not going to be home alot DONT get a puppy - get a more settled adult dog

make sure you have permission for pets where you live - ideally no dog should be in an apartment unless their is a yard.

NEVER get anyone a suprise pet.. NEVER get a pet if you have limited funds because emergencies come up at the worst of times

honestly the best thing would be to wait til college is over and he buys a home with a yard THEN get the pet... otherwise it will be unfair to the dog - if you really love pets you will put the interest of the pet first and do it that way

again
NEVER NEVER buy from a pet store this is the WORST thing anyone can do

First, you need to make absolute certain that dogs are allowed at the college/apartment that you and he are going to be living at. Most college dorms don't allow pets and a lot of apartments don't either. They are small dogs so they don't cost too much. They are fine in an apartment as long as you give them an outlet for their energy (a daily long walk). Be warned, if a Beagle gets bored they will HOWL and/or dig. But they are sweet, loving merry little hounds. Don't ever let them get loose because they will take off after any scent they find. Beagles are prone to epilepsy so be aware of that. The best place to find one would be a rescue. A house-trained, calm adult dog would probably be best for you. Puppies (especially beagles) are tons of work and are very demanding of your time. Also, beagles are smart but can be stubborn. The key to a beagles heart is food, lol.

If he's staying in a dorm or apartment, make sure they allow pets.
Also, make sure he has the time to care for this dog. This is a long term commitment. Make sure your boyfriend can and is willing to put the time and effort into caring for a dog for the next ten years or so.
What if you two break up? Does that mean that the dog will wind up in a shelter?
Try to explore all possibilities before either of you decides to take responsibility for another life.

Beagles love to hunt and roam around in the woods. Get a small female is best. They have a distinctive bark and howl. Not expensive dogs unless have long hair. Short hair breeds are the best. Hardly any sheeding and great companions, love kids and everyone. Loves to smell outside odors. Males will lift leg anywhere, females are not so bold or care. Very loyal and will protect owner till death!

Expensive is the Blood line of the pure breed beagle. Find one with out papers stating a great blood line is the cheapist. I won't spend more than 200.00 on a beagle pup with papers, No more than 100.00 for beagle without papers.

Papers: Mom and Dad breed a particular Blood line. Shows excellent stock. Unless you get one that has been over breed by same blood. Makes them retarded or unlike pure breed dog.

Do not buy from a pet store, they are puppy mill puppies. Puppies can't be left alone for long periods of time. They are more expensive than an older dog. So a puppy might not be the best thing for a college student. Try looking up Beagle rescue in the state you are in and you might find an older housebroken one. But they need a lot of exercise so be ready to walk them a lot.
