Place the cutting board next to a gas range and turn on a burner or two.
The heat and flames draw in the onion mist, burn it, and send it up with the rest of the flame exhaust. In the heat the chemical changes such that it no longer irritates the eyes. One could also use the hood exhaust fan while the burners are on. The only drawback with this solution is that some unlucky fools aren't cooking with gas. They could try an electric range on high, but it doesn't really work (better to use several candles instead.) A poor stove arrangement might make it difficult or force you to cut left handed, but it can usually be worked out (and you don't have to stand very close to the flame). As with the fan, you want the flame to pull the onion fumes away from your face. And as pertains to all methods, you want to keep your face as far away from the hacking and hewing action at the cutting board as you can. I have a range with four burners: two on the left and two on the right with a big space between them where I put the cutting board. I turn on the two right burners, stand a bit to the left, and cut with my right hand.

Here are tips that you will find helpful when cutting onions to avoid crying.....
press your tongue up against the roof of your mouth and breathe through your nose. This covers up the ducts between your nose and mouth that react to the onion and make you start crying.
burn a candle close to where you are cutting the onion.
put the onion in the refrigerator 15 minutes before you cut
cut them in the sink, under water
breath through your mouth while cutting onions
saw this in a movie once and it actually works: place another onion on your head while cutting the other one.
stick a small roll of bread in your mouth while cutting onion

I never cry when cutting onion, I don't know how to explain why, as I used to. I always use a very sharp knife, and cut it up pretty quick. Gnerally I also remove the first layer of the onion which is attached to the skin as I'm too lazy to spend time picking it off. Could be any one of these reasons...or none!

This really works, but isn't the easiest! Have a mouthful of cold water while you chop them, but you need to puff your cheeks out as well (not just let it sit in your mouth) which does make it quite hard work. Every now and then (when it goes warm and your cheeks start to hurt) swallow and get some new water! It sounds stupid (and looks it!) but if your eyes hurt as much as mine do when you chop onions, it will be worth it! Another way is to chop the onions under a few inches of cold water, but this is a right faff, and can ruin the onions! Good Luck!

If you can get the bit attached to the roots out in once piece, you won't cry because that's the bit that contains the liquid that causes the reaction.
It's quite tricky to do but if you cut a circle around the root area at the base of the onion, and wiggle it out, you may have some luck.

try sitting a cup or glass of cold water by you and where you are cutting the onion. You may notice when you cut one and your eyes water, where is it you go to and do, when you have cut it,first thing I do is turn the water on, it was told to me so this is why I suggest at least try it.
and too it may make a difference in the type of onion, i dont think the purple are as bad.

Make sure you keep the hairy bit on your onion for as long as possible... once you cut that you are letting the juice out of the oinion and that is what makes you cry....Also I have heard if you put a spoon in your mouth or if you put a piece of bread in the top of your lip between your teeth and your lip!!! again i dont know if that works but the first one does!

There is sulphur in the onion, and when you chop the onion, the sulphur is diffused in the air. When it gets to your eyes, it mixes with the fluid and produces sulphuric acid, which is why you cry! To not cry:
Take the skin off, cut off the top and the roots, chop it in half and put it in cold water for a second. (Or my sister says having a teaspoon in your mouth when you're doing it works too!)

1. No tears eHow Friend
Run cold water over cut onion.
2. Chop Near the Stove JT
This is from my Mom's friend, Denise: To keep from crying while chopping an onion, place
it on a cutting board on the
counter near the flame of your gas stove, and chop away! For some reason, the flame makes this process tearless.
3. Don't cry eHow Friend
Weird as it sounds, bite down on some bread with your front teeth while cutting onions. Don't bite all the way through it; just hold it there, and you won't cry!
4. How to not cry when chopping onions Darren Lee
Breathe through your mouth. Anything that causes you to unconsiously breathe through your mouth (e.g. chewing gum)will help you keep your eyes from watering.
5. Wear Contact Lenses Florin Clapa
If you wear contact lenses, you won't cry.
6. Freeze it Belinda Behrends
Pop the onion in the freezer for a few minutes prior to chopping. It
7. Hold an Unlit Match in Your Mouth Joe DuMaurier
To prevent your eyes from tearing, simply keep a match in your mouth with the sulphur end outward. The sulphur will neutralize the fumes.
8. Stop crying over a sliced onion Daniel Smith
Leave the root intact as much as possible when slicing the onion. This works, especially when making onion rings. Start at the opposite end of the root. When mincing, the last thing I do is cut off the root.
9. Swimming Goggles eHow Friend
I used my kid's swimming goggles, hoping it would prevent my eyes from tearing. It worked! I just had to make sure the seal around my eyes was sufficient. I looked funny, but I'd rather have rings around my eyes for a few minutes than to endure the agony of onion eyes. I actually chopped 10 large onions this way, with no tears!
10. Score eHow Friend
1. Slice one end off the onion.
2. Hold the onion sliced-end up in your other hand.
3. Use a long knife to cut both vertically and horizontally into the onion to form a checkered surface (scored).
4. Slice off the checkered layer.
5. Score the next layer and slice it off.
Warning: Be sure to keep all fingers out of the way, especially as you get down to the bottom of the onion.
11. Chew away eHow Friend
If you chew bubble gum while chopping onions it stops you eyes from watering. It sounds weird, but it works!
12. No S'more Tears Ida Koch
Place a mini marshmallow in each nostril. It is the tetrasodium pyrophosphate that neutralizes the chemical released by the onion. Break off the first 4 pieces of a Hershey bar and place in between two graham crackers. Place this sandwich in between your front teeth. The chocolate is what works, the cracker just keeps it from melting. Then, chop away!
13. Hold water in your mouth eHow Friend
Hold water in your mouth. That sounds nuts, but you won't shed tears.
14. Wear swim goggles eHow Friend
Wearing swimming goggles while chopping an onion sounds (and looks) ridiculous - but it stops the eyes from watering.
15. Just walk away eHow Friend
After you slice the onion in half, lay the onion down with the inside of the onion facing out. Then just walk away for a few minutes. Come back and slice away.
