My family and I have spent a long time selecting a dog breed that would be right for our home. After much consultation of friends/family, books & websites featuring online breed-family compatibility questionnaires, we concluded our search, deciding on a Whippet.

We also gave a lot of thought to whether we would be better with a puppy or an adult dog. Given that my husband and I both work outside the home (and thus do not have the time required to housetrain a puppy), we determined that an adult dog is the best choice for us.

While many breeders etc. offer purebed Whippet PUPPIES in Canada, only two "Whippet Rescue" type adoption agencies offering ADULT Whippets.

We've come so far over such a long period of time that the idea of a 1- or 2-year-long waiting list is discouraging.

Is there a better/faster way to purchase/adopt a housetrained, friendly and gentle ADULT WHIPPET in Canada? We are located in Mississauga, Ontario (west-GTA/Toronto).

Thanks!
Natalie

This is such great advice - I've found lots already - What a great source of "experts" this has turned out to be for me.

Thank you all, and keep it coming!

Kudos to you for thinking about it so much and doing your research! And for looking at Rescue!

http://www.americanwhippetclub.net/whiprescue.html lists two Canadian rescue groups, not sure if they are the ones you've already found.

Also, consider looking at US rescue groups, as they will often transport, and I think transporting from US to Canada isn't horribly restrictive.

I also concur with the Petfinder recommendations with regards to finding one there, even if it is a mix - that might be a good option for you.

Actually the Whippet Rescue or the humane society is your fastest way. If you let them know you're actively looking I'm sure they'll keep an eye out for you. I'm not sure about the rules regarding pet adoption from the U.S. but you may want to look up the local resue organization in New York State as well

I would recommend going to petfinder.org they have listings for all breeds of dogs for many different place to adopt dogs from. you can type in the breed and the area you live in and find the whippets closest to you. I hope this helps. This is a wonderful website.

Try petfinder.com, or check out some shelters in your area to see if they have a whippet. I adopted a dog from a shelter and couldn't be happier. Good luck!

Go to Petfinder.com, on the left side type in the breed & age you want and area where you are located. A list of shelters should appear. Most will be purebred, some mixes.

There are plenty of whippet rescue groups "south of the border"!! LOL!
Toronto is only..what?..4 hrs. from Sarnia or Windsor? Easy drive & dogs go back & forth every day.

i know exactly what you mean....ugh i don't know why they go so fast..... but its all drama.... ppl now a days have more lust than love.... especially when it comes to guys, they are always desperate for romance..... they actuallly dont knw whether they are in love or just attracted to girl.... all they need is romance..... romance.... having someone to love you and respect you is the best thing in the world and a lot better than just playing all the dramas to get what they want all the time......
