My cat has really bad fleas, and my mom and I are sensitive to their bites. I have to give him away. I love my cat so much, and I cry every day. How do I handle it?

Unfortuneately it's a part of life. However, what I would do is flea bomb the house. If your cat had fleas that bad, they may still be around even with the cat gone.
As for dealing with giving away the cat, there really isn't much advice that can be given. It's similar to when a friend moves away. You'll think about them, but after time, the pain lessens, but they'll always be a part of you.

There are really two issues here, the first being the flea problem. That is so easily solved these days with Advantage and Frontline. With a severe infestation you may have to bomb the house -- every living thing must be out of the house for at least eight hours. Then you apply the flea medication once a month. That's it, no more problems.
I do hope your mom is willing to try this solution. Fleas always seemed to prefer me to the cats and I am very sensitive to the bites -- they can itch for a month.

First: Take your cat to the vet to get treated for the fleas. They can tell you how to get the fleas out of your home.
Second: Make sure its spayed/neutered and don't let it outside where it will get more fleas. Then you won't have to give him away and he will be happier and healthier.
Having said that, I have lost a few cats, mostly due to old age, one due to disease. Its hard to lose any pet, but always think of the joy they bring you in life. They have much shorter life spans than humans. If a cat lives 14-18 years they have had a good long life.
But you have to be a responsible pet owner.

Well, yes, I've lost my share of cats. And I've given away a few too. If your mom and you don't know how to get rid of the fleas on yourselves and the cat, the cat probably would be better off with someone who can, and will.
Like someone else said, there is no set in stone way. It's like your best friend moving to another city: You'll always think of your cat, but it will hurt less eventually. And maybe you'll even see him again, in time.

I do not undesrtand why you did not put flea powder on your cat. I have NEVER had fleas on my cats. ... never..
Suffering the loss of a cat is hard. I had one cat that I loved very much for 16 years and it died and that was 6 months ago and I still cannot get over its loss.

Your nuts! Get rid of the fleas! Not the cat. There are so many ways to rid your cat and/or house of fleas (that work). It's a ridiculous reason to get rid of the cat ... what's really going on?

My Figaro passed at 17 years of age, I have his ashes and think of him every day! But first of all why didn't you bathe your cat and get rid of the fleas! I'm sure your cat didn't enjoy them biting on him either! A simple bath with Dawn would have killed them instantly! If you ever get another cat or any pet, you have to take care of them just like a baby! Their life depends on you!

There are products that will kill fleas. Revolution is one of them or Advantage. They will kill them for 30 days. And if you have to give the cat away, make certain that it goes to a good home. You will still miss it but you will have to take it one day at a time.But if you give it to a good home where it will be taken care of then you won't have to worry about it being abused. Good luck.

Yes, and this is very sad. It feels like loosing part of a family member, maybe you can still be able to go visit this cat if you give it to someone. Don't take it to the shelter because they will kill it if they do not find a home for it within a week.

you will get over it. i have had cats all my life. 1 had to be given away for attacking us, 2 died. you get over it eventually and then mabye you can get another cat. talk to a vet about how to prevent fleas. keep the cat indoors, for instance. it's a bad loss, but as time passes it will be fine.
