There really isn't much quality under $500, I'm afraid. Most of the units that are that cheap are incredibly flimsy and prone to break down -- they generally just turn in to expensive hangers for dirty clothing for most buyers. That being said, Amazon sometimes runs lower prices on Horizon T61 treadmills and you can find them for $499 when they do that -- the normal price is $599. Stay away from the Sears treadmills -- they're made by Icon Fitness and have a breakdown rate of something like 75% in the first year of use.

Check the want ads. People buy good treadmills and then sell them soon after. Check Craigslist, same principle.
