yes, buy a coloring cap and pull strands through this before you add the color to your hair...

This is a great question. A DIY technique is to use a shower cap and poke holes in it to even match where you want the highlights to be. Pull the hair out of the holes so that the hair is hanging out of the shower cap... then put the highlights on it. Be sure to wash your entire scalp before styling.

Also... you can use a fork. Put the bleach cream on the top of the fork (after the part that looks like a rake) and evenly comb the fork through your hair. This is used to make smaller streaks. It will make a nice look but takes more time...

If you don't know what you're doing...don't do it. Spend the extra money and get it done by a professional. At least find a friend who has a clue to do it for you.
