As someone who has lived in NY my whole life, I can give you some insight on why the city gets such rave reviews. First off, New York is one of the largest business centers in the world. Without Wall Street, think about how much different America would be. There's always a lot going on, including the things you mentioned, but there are quiet parts of the city as well. That's what's really so special: there's something for everyone. There are plenty of restaurants and stores open all night and more shows and events than in any other city in the country. The city's inhabitants tend to be either very wealthy or very poor, but no matter who you are, it's easy to get around the city via public transportation. The New York City subway system is among the best in the world. There are always people walking around, and if you live here you'll rarely feel alone as you might in a tiny rural town. Although there's so many exciting things about the city, it is very overpopulated, and anyone who lives here for a significant amount of time will feel that they NEED vacations. Otherwise, living here gets too overwhelming. There are many tourists who have feelings similar to yours. It's tough to adjust to such a unique city in a short amount of time.

I think that either you are lying or you are forming your poor impressions of the city from such terrible movies as "Death Wish", and the "Wanderers". Some of the points in which you were mistaken:
If you were riding the Interstate (depending on where you were driving from), you were in New Jersey or New England. The interstates generally do not go through the centers of any city, so I doubt you were able to see cars on fire, tires being stolen, and people pulling over drinking beer (at least they were nice enough to pull over and drink their beer and not drink and drive -- lol).
Times Square is one of the busiest commercial and entertainment neighborhoods in the world. Along the main Avenues and the side streets, parking is not allowed. Parking is via parking garage, which while expensive, it is quite safe. Yes, in other parts of the city people use clubs on their vehicles (and most are equipped with burglar alarms), but I think that in most urban areas this is the case as well.
While a comedy show is not the best place to get an opinion about New York City, it truly is one of the best places in the world. The city is amongst the best in culture, entertainment, business, fun, excitement, energy, people, personality, etc!
I suggest that you come and take a real look at how great a place is New York City.

Everyone has their own experiences no matter where you go. New York City has it's good parts and it's bad. It's my personal experience that NYC is a great and wonderful city and I would love to live there. However, yours might not be as such.
Because of it's high population, crime is a bit higher, though not by much per capita, than you'll see elsewhere However, burning cars are a rarity. Tires being stolen happens everywhere. In fact, I live on a military installation and we have to pull guard on parking lots because people like to jack rims. And drinking and driving happens everywhere. Heck, even in the rich of the rich! Mel Gibson just got nailed for it for pete's sake!
Now, NYC is like the land of opportunity within a land of opportunity. It has everything you can think of within it's borders. The good, the bad, and anything in between. If you look at it with a negative attitude and are seeking out something to hold against it, you'll see jacked rims and drunk drivers. But if you go there with a good mind, or even a blank one, you'll see nothing more than people of all walks of life trying to get by. Some will be more successful than others, and some will use unconventional means to get there. But if you don't want to see the good, you won't. Try going back, and this time look up, think positive. See the good, not just the bad. Maybe it'll change your mind, maybe it won't. But at least you'll have tried and maybe you'll be able to answer your own question.
By the way, how did you see the club on every car in times square from the interstate?

Where the hell are you visiting that you see tires being stolen? FIrst off there's no interstate that enters the city so you may be mistaken. NY is loud, crowded, expensive and sometimes smelly this is true. But you dont see drugs being sold openly in the streets, you dont see loitering NYPD is EVERYWHERE and you can get a ticket or arrested for damn near anything, I was born raised and lived in the city for 27 years. Maybe your going to really bad neighborhoods. I now live in Maryland and every car down here has the club on it too, you have to be safe. Down here I live in a "great" neighborhood but you still see loitering and drug dealing at 7 in the morning, Ive seen things down here in the country that Ive NEVER seen in NY so next time you visit the city check out Central Park, go to Times Square, visit the Botanical Garden in Brooklyn do some research you'll have a great time and you'll see NY isnt what you see in the movies. Oh and Id love to know what magical island your from.

I moved to rural NY from rural TX. I was nervous about visiting NYC until I finally went. I didn't drive in though, I caught MetroNorth and rode it into Grand Central. I go a couple of times a year now. I usually only go as far as I can walk from Grand Central and I can truly say that I LOVE NY! I always feel safe. Obviously I don't have any experience outside of Manhattan, but I would suggest that you find a train station and go in that way if you're just going to sight see. Then you'll probably love NY too. (-: You can pick up a map of the surrounding area and find your way to Times Square, Rockefeller Center, the Library, Chrysler Center, Empire State Building, St. Pauls Cathedral and so much more.

I've been to NYC a lot, and I have NEVER seen a car on fire or any of the other things you have described. In fact, I have found the people to be pretty nice -- except for one bartender who will remain nameless.
