The sun's rays hit the Earth's atmosphere, where the light is scattered by nitrogen and oxygen molecules in the air. The blue wavelength of this light is affected more than the red and green wavelengths, causing the surrounding air to appear blue. At sunset, the sun's light passes farther through the atmosphere, deflecting and decreasing the blue in the air. Scattering by dust particles and pollution in the air causes the sunset to appear red.

Blue light has the shortest visible light wavelength. It is then the easiest to scatter by dust particles, (& water molecules), in the sky. Scattering makes it travel in all directions lighting up the sky. The longer wavelengths pass straight through and hit the ground. At Dusk the suns light comes in at a lower angle, thuse passing through more atmosphere, and the longer wavelengths of sunlight are now scattered too. That is why we have colorful sunsets with reds, oranges, purples as well as blue.

Rayleigh scattering (named after Lord Rayleigh) is the scattering of light, or other electromagnetic radiation, by particles much smaller than the wavelength of the light. It occurs when light travels in transparent solids and liquids, but is most prominently seen in gases. Rayleigh scattering of sunlight by the atmosphere is the main reason light from the sky is blue.

As we know our main source of light is the sun ,, but moon just reflect the sun light,, Sun light consists of different rays which reach the earth but as we know the atmosphere layers play as a good filters for these rays,, Ozone layer can absorbe Ultraviolet harmful ray,, other gases can absorbe another rays,, these amosphere filters can absorbe most of visible rays from violet to red but it allow blue ray ,which make our sky color

The sun emits red and blue light and our atmosphere scatters blue light more easily because the wavelengths of blue light are closer to that of air molecules. hope this answers your question!
