It's a technique to measure the electrical activity of the heart. Electrodes are placed on each wrist and the left foot and six places around the chest. Then the machine measures the wave of depolarization through the heart and records it on graph paper. Looking at the graph paper, a doctor can tell things about the heart, like the heart rate, where the electical impulse begins, the size of the heart, if there has been a heart attack, etc.

It is when they attach 12 wires or leads to (mostly) your chest to monitor your heart. Your heart uses electrical signals to create the pumping action. The electical current causes the cardiac muscles to contract. The ECG monitors these electrical signals and can tell your doctor about how well your heart is functioning. ECG's don't hurt, in fact it can be relaxing if they are doing an 'at rest' test. You just lie on a table and wait while the machine records its info. If you are doing a stress test, you will probably have to do domething like run or walk on a treadmill. it is not at all painful. The leads attach by a bit of suction with some gel. Don't worry.

I hope averything turns out well.
