Heartburn is a medical condition that is caused from the valve in your stomach not closing properly. When this happens your stomach is allowing the acids to rise up in your oesophagus and this will give the heartburn sensation. Heartburn has been proven to cause ulcers and now even esophageal cancer. If you are having repeated symptoms it is important to consult your doctor. They can give you medication in which you take usually once a day that stops the sensations, sometimes after daily use it will stop the heartburn for months at a time, as it has become a minor cure.
Certain foods trigger heartburn more than others, this depends on you as a person though.

The main causes of heartburn are sedentary habits, not eating on time, consuming food rich in calories, consumption of alcohol, smoking and untimely sleeping hours. Eating oily, spicy and junk food also creates heartburn. Drinking aerated cold drinks, tea, coffee and consuming less water. This disorder can be corrected by changing life style and eating habits. Eat good amount of vegetables, fruits and salad. Increase intake of drinking water. Daily mild exercise or brisk walking and proper sleeping time will certainly bring a relief from heartburn. Watch your bowel movements to avoid getting constipated. Take care and be in good health.

Heartburn is cause by the sphincter at the top of your stomach not keeping the stomach acid in...this sphincter is a one way valve, but excess acid and gas will force it open, releasing acid to rise (acid reflux). Taking calciums pills will help, but don't address the damage done by the acid.
You will need to also take a prescription medicine to fix the damage done.

Avoid greasy and spicy foods, eating before lying down, and carbonated beverages.
