A lot of sacrificial hair that's shed at temples goes into wigs. Tirupati heads the list. Although feeding the export market with over 400 tonnes of hair every year, the temple has enough left for the local market as well.

City wigmakers believe wigs made from hair procured at Tirupati have greater value. Most of them flaunt in their contact cards that they use hair from the temple town.

Other and smaller temples also auction sacrificial hair. K. Venketaswara Rao of Mahalakshmi Wig Works depends as much on tramp sellers who check out smaller temples as on wholesalers on Devraj Mudali Street who "clean up" the big ones.

Wigmakers also visit villages for hair. However, more often than not they return empty-handed. "Rural women have long hair, but it often lacks quality — because they don't fuss over it as much as their urban counterparts, " says P. Sathyam of Modern Natural Wig Works.

"Short hair is of little use. Long hair is what's required," says Sathyam. "But where is long hair in Chennai?" he laughs.

With most beauty parlours encouraging women to adopt short, manageable hairstyles, long hair is a rare commodity.
